Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Duchess of Windsor (Wallis Warfield). The Heart Has its Reasons. NY: David McKay Company, 1956, 1st editiion, 1st printing, xii, 372 pp. *** Sub-title - The Memoirs of the Duchess of Windsor. Warfield was an American socialite. She met the Prince of Wales ( David Davis) and they fell in love. David became Edward VII, King of England. Wallis was a divorcee. When the King announced his plans to marry Wallis Warfield a full-blown crisis ensued in which the British Government forbade him to marry what they perceived to be an undesirable commoner, from America no less. King Edward decided to renounce his kingship and went ahead and married her. This was an absolute sensation on both sides of the Pond. In this book the Duchess recounts her upbringing, the events leading up to her marriage, and the couple's subsequent life. With two sections of b&w photo illustrations from historical sources. Original dust jacket (not price clipped) has b&w photo portraits front and back and is in a clear protective cover. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Teal cloth boards and brown cloth spine. Clean with very light wear in solid binding. The jacket is clean with wear at all folds, rubbing on front panel, moderate chipping at spine ends (no loss), large closed tear from top of spine into back panel (repaired on verso), small chip and crease at bottom of back panel. Book is VG+ in Fair jacket. *** 8.5 inches tall by 6 inches.

By the end of this fascinating ad well edited collection of the letters of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor,(Wallis Simpson and Edward V111) one comes as close as possible to knowing the writers. In contrast to the popularly accepted picture of a scheming woman, Wallis in particular comes across as a likeable, vibrant woman who got caught up in something she didn't quite understand. The author's extensive commentary is very readable and greatly enhances understanding of the letters. Rarely does a book combine, as this one does, great popular interest and historically important revelations.

Wallis, Duchess of Windsor (born Bessie Wallis Warfield, later Spencer and then Simpson), was an American socialite and the wife of Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (former King Edward VIII). Their intention to marry and her status as a divorcée caused a constitutional crisis that led to Edward's abdication. "Every country in Europe has certain dishes for which it has always been famous. That is many times true of the United States, which has a different culinary tradition for every large section. I myself am most familiar, of course, with Southern cooking, and especially the dishes of Maryland.I have been very happy to help carry some of the well-known dishes of my native land to other countries, and especially to have served on my table Southern dishes which appeal to the Duke.It is the simple dishes of my homeland which are most popular with me, and which are the ones most frequently served at my table.".
