When the King announced his plans to marry Wallis Warfield a full-blown crisis ensued in which the British Government forbade him to marry what they perceived to be an undesirable commoner, from America no less. King Edward decided to renounce his kingship and went ahead and married her. This was an absolute sensation on both sides of the Pond. In this book the Duchess recounts her upbringing, the events leading up to her marriage, and the couple's subsequent life. With two sections of b&w photo illustrations from historical sources. Original dust jacket (not price clipped) has b&w photo portraits front and back and is in a clear protective cover. By the end of this fascinating ad well edited collection of the letters of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor,(Wallis Simpson and Edward V111) one comes as close as possible to knowing the writers. In contrast to the popularly accepted picture of a scheming woman, Wallis in particular comes across as a likeable, vibrant woman who got caught up in something she didn't quite understand.The author's extensive commentary is very readable and greatly enhances understanding of the letters. Rarely does a book combine, as this one does, great popular interest and historically important revelations.
