Il romanzo venne scritto nel 1854 dall'allora arcivescovo di Westminster, poi cardinale Nicholas Wiseman, un religioso di origine irlandese nato a Siviglia. L'opera fu composta con l'intento di sensibilizzare alla fede cattolica i lettori, in particolar modo quelli di cultura inglese.
