Wiseman argues that Fernández, who sailed from South America in the 1570s, may have discovered a large southern landmass that matches descriptions of New Zealand's coastline and climate. Drawing on old maps, Spanish maritime records, and historical speculation, Wiseman suggests that this early voyage was later forgotten or dismissed by mainstream historians. The book presents evidence such as navigational routes, ship logs, and geographic clues that point to a possible Spanish landing on New Zealand's shores in 1576. Wiseman also discusses why this theory has been overlooked, proposing that political and cultural biases may have shaped the accepted narrative of New Zealand's European discovery.
