Written from his diary and contemporary notes, Wistar's autobiography was intended only for his family and friends. His will, upon his death in 1905, prohibited publicati…on of the autobiography for at least 5 years. The original publication of 250 copies by the Wistar Institute was in 1914. Isaac Wistar traveled across the continent with the vanguard of the Forty-Niners; he earned and lost small fortunes as a miner, trapper, muleteer, speculator, and lawyer before he was thirty. He helped suppress the California vigilantes in 1856. After his return to Pennsylvania from his western travels, his privately raised regiment helped save the Union forces at Gettysburg in the Seven Days Battle. Mintz states, ''Wistar's narrative of his journey over the Humboldt Sink to the gold areas is well told and quite entertaining.'' Wheat calls this a ''significant and entertaining narrative by a man of great native attainments.'', and a tale of ''first quality and interest''. Listed in Howes Final Edition, Number W597; Mint'z Trail no. 501; Wheat's Gold Rush no. 234; Paher's Nevada no. 2191; Cowan, page 692.
