Hardcover. Presumed first edition/first printing. xxii, 240, [2] p. Illustrations. Footnotes. Appendices. Index. From Wikipedia: "The Kamikaze; ("divine" or "spirit wind"), were suicide attacks by military aviators from the Empire of Japan against Allied naval vessels in the closing stages of the Pacific campaign of World War II, designed to destroy warships more effectively than was possible with conventional attacks. During World War II, about 3, 860 kamikaze pilots were killed, and about 19% of kamikaze attacks managed to hit a ship. Kamikaze aircraft were essentially pilot-guided explosive missiles, purpose-built or converted from conventional aircraft. Pilots would attempt to crash their aircraft into enemy ships in what was called a "body attack" The goal of crippling or destroying Allied ships, particularly aircraft carriers, was considered to be a just reason for sacrificing pilots and aircraft. While the term "kamikaze" usually refers to the aerial strikes, it also applied to other suicide attacks. The Japanese military also used submarines, human torpedoes, speedboats and divers." Good. Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. The format is approximately 5.75 inches by 9 inches. xv, [1], 310, [2] pages. Decorative covers. Footnotes. Illustrations. Maps. Tabular Data. Appendices (including statistics). Index. This highly regarded war memoir was a best seller in both Japan and the United States during the 1960s and has long been treasured by historians for its insights into the Japanese side of the surface war in the Pacific. The author was a survivor of more than one hundred sorties against the Allies and was known throughout Japan as the "Unsinkable Captain." A hero to his countrymen, Capt. Hara exemplified the best in Japanese surface commanders: highly skilled (he wrote the manual on torpedo warfare), hard driving, and aggressive. Moreover, he maintained a code of honor worthy of his samurai grandfather, and, as readers of this book have come to appreciate, he was as free with praise for American courage and resourcefulness as he was critical of himself and his senior commanders. Capt. Tameichi Hara was a destroyer squadron commander for most of the war aboard Shigure. Fred Saito translated and expanded the original manuscript, after spending more than eight hundred hours interviewing Hara. Captain Roger Pineau, U.S. Naval Reserve, was with the U.S. Department of State. He was the editor of a number of articles by Japanese naval leaders of World War II that appeared in the U.S. Naval Institute Proceedings and formerly an assistant to Rear Admiral Samuel E. Morrison in the preparation of his History of U. S. Naval Operations in World War II. Tameichi Hara (Hara Tameichi, October 16, 1900 October 10, 1980) was an Imperial Japanese naval commander during the Pacific War and the author of the IJN manual on torpedo attack techniques, notable for his skill in torpedo warfare and night fighting. Hara was the only IJN destroyer captain at the start of World War II to survive the entire war and his memoirs serve as an important source for historians. Hara's last sortie was as captain of the light cruiser Yahagi as flagship of the destroyer screen accompanying Yamato on her fateful last mission as part of Operation Ten-Go. Hara survived the sinking of Yahagi, which also saw the loss of Yamato and four escorting destroyers. Hara ended the war at Kawatana training Japanese sailors to operate Shinyo suicide boats, where he witnessed firsthand the effects of the second atomic bombing. Postwar Hara commanded merchant ships which transported salt. He was the sole surviving witness to several important meetings and conferences which he recounted in his memoirs. Hara's memoirs, Japanese Destroyer Captain: Pearl Harbor, Guadalcanal, Midway the Great Naval Battles as Seen Through Japanese Eyes (1961), were translated into English and French and became an important reference for the Japanese perspective for historians writing about the Pacific Campaign of World War II. In his memoir, Hara objects to compulsory suicide as official doctrine, which he saw as a violation of bushido values. His personal doctrines demonstrate why he survived the war and the Japanese lost it they were inflexible, and he was not. His doctrines were "Never ever do the same thing twice" and "If he hits you high, then hit him low; if he hits you low, then hit him high", the latter being also a maxim of Douglas MacArthur's. Hara criticizes his superiors for using cavalry tactics to fight naval battles; never understanding the implications of air power; dividing their forces in the face of enemy forces of unknown strength; basing tactics on what they thought their enemy would do; failing to appreciate the speed with which the enemy could develop new weapons and accepting a war of attrition with a foe more capable of maintaining it. The Naval Institute Press is pleased to make available this now-classic war memoir that was a best seller in both Japan and the United States during the 1960s. Originally published as a paperback in 1961, it has long been treasured by World War II buffs and profes.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. 596 pages. Co-Author's Notes. Maps. Notes. Bibliography. Index. Edwin Thomas Layton (April 7, 1903 - April 12, 1984) was a rear admiral in the United States Navy. Layton is most noted for his work as an intelligence officer during WWII. Layton was in charge of all intelligence in the Pacific Ocean area. Layton was a champion of using code-breaking information in war planning operations. Layton's book describes how Kimmel and his army counterpart at Pearl Harbor, General Walter C. Short, the commanders there, were scapegoats for failures by higher-ups in Washington, D.C. The late Admiral Layton, who was the fleet intelligence officer for Admiral Nimitz through out World War II, describes the breakdown in the intelligence process prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and shares his experiences witnessing feuding among high-level naval officers in Washington that contributed to Japan's successful attack. Roger Pineau entered the Navy in 1942 and spent most of World War II at the Naval Communications Annex in Washington, where he worked in code-breaking operations. In 1947, he became an assistant to Samuel E. Morison, a Harvard University historian and Navy rear admiral who wrote the official Navy history of World War II. John Edward Costello (1943-1995) was a British military historian, who wrote about World War I, World War II and the Cold War. He then worked as a director and scriptwriter for the BBC before writing on military history. The former Pacific Fleet intelligence officer recounts the deciphering of Japanese codes before Pearl Harbor, the failures and mishaps that contributed to the disaster, and intelligence activities in the Pacific. Why did the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor? How did they inflict the greatest military defeat in American history? What went wrong? "And I Was There" is the first book by a top-ranking American navy officer to answer these questions. Admiral Layton scrupulously kept these secrets to himself until the recent declassification of a half million documents from U.S. military archives. Only then did Layton believe he was free to tell his story. He names those who knew about Japanese intentions, how they acquired their knowledge and how they misused it. He speaks with unique authority. He was the Pacific Fleet's intelligence officer prior to Pearl Harbor, and he continued to serve in the same capacity for Admiral Nimitz throughout the war. As Layton says: he was there. First U.S. Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].…
