The poet's inscription is to American composer and key artist during the Harlem Renaissance, J. Rosamond Johnson.Known for his simplistic yet lyrical style of writing, Binner was the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa poet at Harvard in 1911 and at the University of California in 1919. Popular during his age, he was elected as the President of the Poetry Society of America in 1920. At the time of publishing, 1925, Bynner famously lived in Santa Fe and entertained guests such as D.H. Lawrence, who is the title of one of the poems in this particular anthology.
