The signed first edition of Caravan, a anthology, written by prolific American poet Witter Bynner. Published by Alfred Knopf in 1925.In the publisher's original paper boards, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. The poet's inscription is to American composer and key artist during the Harlem Renaissance, J. Rosamond Johnson.Known for his simplistic yet lyrical style of writing, Binner was the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa poet at Harvard in 1911 and at the University of California in 1919. Popular during his age, he was elected as the President of the Poetry Society of America in 1920. At the time of publishing, 1925, Bynner famously lived in Santa Fe and entertained guests such as D.H. Lawrence, who is the title of one of the poems in this particular anthology. In the publisher's original paper boards, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, smart. Fading to the spine and to the extremities, with the small odd spot to the front board and tail of the spine, and smudging towards the right edge of the back board. Slight bumping, with a small chip to the head of the spine. Dust wrapper is generally smart, with large spots to the flyleaf joints. Fading to the spine and smudging to the front and rear wrappers, with flyleaves being generally bright and clean. . A chip to the head and tail of the wrapper spine, heavier to the tail. Chips to the head and tail of the fly leaf joints, with a small split to head of rear fly leaf. Slight browning and minor offsetting to the end papers, and very slight wear to the bottom of hinge of front end papers. The poet's signed inscription to Johnson on front free end paper. Internally, firmly bound, with slight wear between leaves pp.20-21. Pages are bright and clean, with the rare faint spotting to leaf extremities, heavier to leaves pp.34-35.
