Their personalities are the empirical basis of Professor Wolfensteiri's elaboration of some of the psychological characteristics of revolutionists. He poses three questions: Why does a man become a revolutionist? What personality attributes enable him to become an effective revolutionary leader? What psychological attributes enable a man to effect the transition to power? The author takes as his starting point the idea that men who rebel, despite many differences in character, resemble each other in some fundamental ways. His theoretical basis lies in psychoanalysis and the application of its insights to the world of politics. By focusing on the personalities of three important revolutionists he hypothesizes a model of a distinctive "revolutionary personality." Lenin, Trotsky, and Gandhi are discussed in terms of trust, pride, courage, industry, confidence, and drive~the values that result from the successful management of the problems of the various stages of psycho~sexual growth. Professor Wolfenstein explores the reaction of the revolutionist to the successful revolution: Lenin adapted well once the Russian Revolution was won, but failed to provide for his succession; Trotsky wanted "permanent revolution," with its implication of an ever~receding goal, and eventually failed to see the Stalin threat; Gandhi became the inspirator of the Indian people in getting the British to "quit India," but had an abhorrence of the administration of actual, practical power, and thus was not at ease when independence came. Occasionally civilization has been changed forever by its revolutionists. In this study the author seeks a larger insight into what is in the human personality that can and sometimes does start it on its revolutionary career.
