Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 4to. 7 ¾ x 6 ½ inches. 56 leaves (112 pages). In the original decorated paper covered boards, leather spine. Shelf worn with spots of stain. Leaves toned with foxing and scattered stains. About 4 leaves have been ripped out, one torn at top margin, one torn from top edge through the middle of gutter. A Mayo's cut plug tobacco aluminum sheet and several folded account sheets laid in. Binding tight, in very good condition. Although dated 1807 on the front endpaper, the earliest account is from October 1806, and the latest account date is 1830. The ledger contains the accounts of Benjamin Work, very likely a descendant of Joseph Work and Elizabeth Ingoldsby of Plymouth and Boston, Massachusetts, respectively. The Work family was also well represented in Ashford, Connecticut and North Carolina in the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the accounts include day-to-day staples such as butter, tallow, coffee, tea, apples, molasses, timber and other goods, it appears that Benjamin Work was a butcher. Beef, veal, lamb, mutton and pork, including butchering and dressing animals, are the bulk of the accounts. His customers included Capt. John Prince, Peter Minor, John Judson, Solomon Lamphere, Martin Hurlbut, David Bruster, David Lathrop, Thomas Ewens, Rufus Burnham, Aaron Cook, Magor [Major] Woodward, Abner Boutwell, William Jenkins, Capt. Benjamin Owens, Benjamin Snow, Willard Davis, Thadeus Richards, Benjamin Bosworth, Zera Preston, William Blake, Colonel Anget?, Captain Josiah Severn, Messrs. Godard, Procter, Clark, Parkhurst, etc. Contains a couple of recipes for "horse sore" and one "for wounds" (this includes 2 spoonfuls of gunpowder). A list of births and deaths, presumably of the Work family (only the first names are recorded), beginning with "Harry was borne march 8th ye 1763", Ingoldsby (1765), Elizabeth (1767), John (1769), Almenia (1771), Henry (1774), William (1776), Sam (1778), Benjamin (likely the owner of this ledger, 1782), Joseph (1784), Ingoldsby (1786), Algernon (1791), Alfred (1793), and the deaths of Algernon (1800), Almenia [spelled Almenea] 1806, Samuel (1811) and father (1817). Also includes expenses (1824-1830), for highway taxes, hay, dressing cloth, cords of wood, etc. Signed by Author(s).
