It was compiled between 1008 and 1012 and remained the definitive work of ecclesiastical law until the publication of the Decretum Gratiani in the 12th century. In this collection, Burchard gathered canonical provisions from council decrees, papal decretals, as well as biblical and patristic texts. His compilation was widely received and frequently cited in contemporary canon law in the form of so-called Brocarda (short legal maxims or principles). The Decretorum Libri XX is systematically divided into twenty books, covering topics such as church organization, sacraments, the clergy, marriage, and criminal law.
