      First edition thus. xii, 74 pages. Hardcover: H 23.25cm x L 15.75cm. Glassine dust jacket lightly toned with nicks, shallow chips, and short tears at edges. Underlying white paper title half-band/wrapper has a few faint foxing spots, British shilling price still on front flap. Dark brown cloth decorated with bright gilt and black stamping to spine, tasseled rope decoration in black and gilt upon front board. Black top edge. Moderate foxing to pastedowns with light foxing to free endpapers. Interior pages are clean. Binding retains some crispness. A very good copy in vg- (glassine) and vg+ (paper) dust jackets. Classic short novel by Spanish Baroque dramatist Tirso de Molina. Translated from the original Spanish by Ilsa Barea with color illustrations by Arthur Wragg.

Black and white social expressionist illustrations accompanying the Lord's Prayer with allusions to social justice, class consciousness, and alienation. Arthur Wragg was a socialist and pacifist. He was imprisoned as a conscientious objector in England during WWII. This book was published a year after that conflict, and embodies the chiaroscuro . block style of his pre-fantastical phase of the mid-1950s when he did poster art and album covers for Argo records.
