Wright, Myles. Lord Leverhulme's unknown venture: the Lever Chair and the beginnings of town and regional planning 1908-48. London: Hutchinson Benham, 1982, 223pp., very good dust-jacket, very good green cloth. The 1st Lord Leverhulme, Sir Charles Reilly, Stanley Adshead, Sir George Pepler, Sir Patrick Abercrombie, Lord Holford. - Lord Leverhulme 's Unknown Venture is the story of the foundation of the Lever Chair in Civic Design and Town Planning at Liverpool University, and its contribution to the creation of the profession of town planning in Britain and the Commonwealth. In 1909 William Hesketh Lever, later the 1st Viscount Leverhulme and founder of the international company Unilever, had at his disposal the highest sum in libel damages ever awarded up to that time. As a result of his lifelong interest in architecture, and prompted by his friend the architect Charles Reilly, he made a deed of gift to Liverpool University to found the Lever Chair - the world's first university school of town planning: a farsighted decision, for the phrase 'town planning' was then but two years old. Myles Wright, himself fifth Lever professor, writes of the great things that resulted from Lever's philanthropic action. The story is told through the lives of six remarkable men: Lever himself; Charles Reilly, the man who had the idea; George Pepler, who although not a member of the department had great influence on its aims and the careers of Adshead and Abercrombie; and the first three Lever professors, Adshead, Abercrombie and Hoiford. These men, whose lives are described here in brief, reveal how, in large measure, they created the profession of and education for town planning. Lord Leverhulme s Unknown Venture spans the department's most creative era, 1908-48. Myles Wright recalls the lives and evaluates the influence of the first Lever professors -outstanding men who, with their students, went on to lay the foundations of post-war planning in Britain. 9780091503406 ISBN 009150340X.

"The editors and authors of this book believe that the causes of the major failings in the working of town planning are political, and affect the whole country. Their remedy would require, first of all, an appraisal of the big so9cial and technological changes and migrations since the war, in the light of their influence on the location and form of all building developments; and then a recasting of central policies to form a clear and workable framework for local plans."
