This novel was the first novel by an African-American author to be featured as a Book-of-the-Month Club selection and was published on March 1, 1940, the same day that the trade edition came out. This is a story about systemic racism in America and one of the earliest successful attempts to explain the racial divide in America in terms of the social conditions imposed on African Americans by the dominant white society. The novel was the basis for the 1941 Broadway play of the same name, produced and directed by Orson Welles and starring Canada Lee. It has been adapted for film three times, 1951, 1986, and 2019. …
