Add to basketHardback. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition Presumed. No stated date but believed to be late 1930s or early 1940s. Presumed first edition. xii, 212pp. This is the story of a young South African who, after serving with distinction in the 1914-18 war, disgraced himself over a worthless woman. Then came a period of "roughing it" in America, after which he worked his passage to France and joined the famous Foreign Legion. The book is bound in the original red cloth covered boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the corners and heavier bumping with some fading and a little damage to the cloth at spine ends. There is some damp spotting and fading on the fore edge of the front board and a water stain around the bottom corner of the rear board. The contents are tight and clean with a faint stain near the bottom corner of the rear fixed endpaper and a name and date has been written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling and a large red stain is visible on the reverse of the wrapper around the bottom rear corner. Small pieces are missing from the corner tips, about 1/4" from the bottom of the spine, a larger piece from the bottom rear spine corner, up to about 1/2" from the top of the spine and up to about 1/4" from parts of the top front and rear edges. The top front edge has noticeable creasing and there are several small tears on the top edge. The bottom spine edges have tears of up to about 1 1/2" and these tears together with some other smaller tears on the edges have been repaired on the reverse with document repair tape.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Hardcover. 12mo. Published by Limited Editions Club, New York, 1937. 92 pgs. Limited and numbered copy, this is #536 of the limited edition of 1500 copies. Signed by illustrator Valenti Angelo on the colophon page. Illustrated. Slipcased. Slipcase is rubbed, worn and chipped. Bound in cloth boards with titles present to the spine and blindstamped designed boards. Boards have shelf-wear present to the extremities (spine is lightly sunned and faded). No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. This scarce, beautiful poem, asserts that Happiness and Misery are equally divided and that Self-cultivation with due regard to others is the sole and sufficient object of human life. Written by Sir Richard Burton under the pseudonym of Hâjî Abdû El-Yezdî after his return from Mecca in 1854. The Kasîdah contains many references to 19th Century scientific and philosophical concepts, most notably the evolution of species. Nonetheless, it is a Sufi text to the core, and one of the few instances of Burton writing in the first person about his belief system, albeit under the cloak of pseudonymity. A Kasidah is a classical Arabic or Persian panegyric, which must begin with a reference to a forsaken campground, followed by a lament, and a prayer to ones comrades to halt while the memory of the departed dwellers is invoked. The same rhyme must run through the entire composition, no matter length of the poem. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall.
