Die Verleihung des Ordens an den damaligen russischen Ministerpräsidenten Wladimir Putin im Jahr 2009 und die Laudatio des damaligen Ministerpräsidenten Tillich ernteten viel Kritik; daraufhin wurde der Preis ab 2010 in 'St. Georgs Orden' umbenannt.
