He was initially rejected by the RAF on medical grounds, but after the outbreak of war on 3 September 1939 he was accepted.In 1941 Johnson began flying regularly and took part in the offensive sweeps over occupied Europe from 1941 to 1944. Johnson was involved in heavy aerial fighting during this period. His combat tour included the Battle of Normandy, Operation Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge.He was credited with some 34 individual victories over enemy aircraft, as well as seven shared victories.He flew some 700 operational sorties and engaged enemy aircraft on 57 occasions.Lovely association to have when owning this title 8vo 322pp First Edition 1st Impression 8vo - over 5¾" - 6'' Tall.
