Includes Foreword by Emil F. Frey (Director of the Moody Medical Library at the University of Texas), Essay on Medical Libraries and Medical History by Edmund D. Pellegrino; and Notes and Acknowledgments by Larry J. Wygant. Also contains a Catalogue of the Collection, and Bibliographical References. Truman G. Blocker Jr. graduated from UTMB in 1933. He was the first president of UTMB (1967-1974). An extremely skilled plastic surgeon, Dr. Blocker was an expert in maxillofacial procedures and in the field of burns. A prolific scholar of 182 publications, Dr. Blocker also procured for UTMB one of the largest medical history libraries in the United States. The Legion of Merit was one of the many awards Dr. Blocker received in his long, illustrious career. Edmund Daniel Pellegrino (June 22, 1920 - June 13, 2013) was an American bioethicist and academic who served as the 11th president of The Catholic University of America (CUA) from 1978 to 1982.[2] For 35 years, Pellegrino was a distinguished professor of medicine and medical ethics and the Director of the Kennedy Institute of Ethics at Georgetown University. Pellegrino was an expert both in clinical bioethics, and in the field of medicine and the humanities, specifically, the teaching of humanities in medical school, which he helped pioneer). He was the second layman to hold the position of President of Catholic University. He was the Chairman of the President's Council on Bioethics, under the 43rd U.S. President, George W. Bush, and was the founder of the Edmund D. Pellegrino Center for Clinical Bioethics (renamed in his honor in 2013) at Georgetown University. Emil Frey had a successful career as a medical librarian, working at the Mayo Clinic Medical Library in the 1960s, and moving on to become the director of Health Sciences Libraries at State University of New York, Stony Brook and University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. Larry J. Wygant was long associated with UTMB and was particularly noted for this seminal work, "The Galveston Quarantine Stations, 1853-1950," Texas Medicine 82 (June 1986). The special collections came into being mostly through the efforts of Truman G. Blocker, Jr., M.D. (1909-1984), plastic surgeon, medical educator, and the first President of UTMB. The expansion of the rare book library began in the late 1960s. With funds provided by foundations, UTMB clinical departments, and with donations from various individuals, the historical collections grew steadily in the 1970s and the 1980s. It comprises approximately About 18,000 rare book titles, with strengths in anatomy and surgery; anesthesiology; immunology; occupational medicine; psychiatry and behavioral sciences; Selected institutional archives and manuscript records, personal papers of UTMB faculty and alumni including the Centennial Oral History, and records of several Texas organizations in the health sciences; approximately 10,000 photographs, mostly relating to UTMB; 6,000 portraits of historical figures in medicine; over 100,000 postage stamps; 5,400 hospital postcards; and About 2,000 artifact items including microscopes, medical and surgical instruments, pharmaceutical collection, medals, and related memorabilia.
