Xenofonte considera que a Guerra do Peloponeso e os distintos acontecementos da segunda metade do século v serán a orixe de todos os males dese tempo. Na Constitución dos Lacedemonios, Xenofonte representa os ideais oligárquicos de Esparta á vista das consecuencias da Guerra do Peloponeso. O modelo que el propón baséase nas reformas instituídas por Licurgo. Na Constitución dos Atenienses, o autor analiza desde un punto de vista moi crítico o réxime da democracia partindo das bases do poder do estado ateniense que se configura durante a Pentecontencia, período que abrangue desde a derrota dos persas na Segunda Guerra Médica no 480 a.n.e. até o inicio da Guerra do Peloponeso, no 433 a.n.e. Presenta este modelo de goberno como un réxime eficaz pero corrupto ao mesmo tempo. O obxectivo do autor é chegar ao concepto de eunomía ou goberno dos mellores.
