Originally published between 1823 and 1827, Thiers' work on the French Revolution was considered controversial in its time due to his support of Napoleon and the principles of the Revolution. This is a new edition Illustrated by Yan' Dargent (Jean-Edouard Dargent). In good condition, the marbled boards are set off by a ridged spine with gilt lettering. There is some foxing and in volume one, there is a large segment near the front that has dark brown discoloration which covers the top of the pages but doesn't seem to affect the text. The front gutter is cracked in volume one also. The corners are scuffed and chipped, missing a little paper. Some discoloration to the edges of the block. Volume two has foxing throughout and the corners are chipped and bent. Copiously illustrated, with subject matter split between portraits (including one of Thiers as frontispiece in volume one) and scenes from various moments in the Revolution.
