Así, mientras el marxismo consideraba la Historia como un proceso, aduciendo que las estructuras socioeconómicas determinaban el cambio social, el movimiento francés de los Annales relegaba la política y los personajes relevantes en favor de un discurso analítico ?el estructuralismo? en el que los condicionantes contextuales determinaban el devenir de los acontecimientos. Con el tiempo la disciplina trasladó su interés desde el andamiaje socioeconómico de la sociedad a los aspectos más variados de las relaciones interpersonales donde las iniciativas de las personas recuperaban el protagonismo en el discurso historiográfico conforme cedían los planteamientos estructuralistas. Ese proceso no ha hecho más que acentuarse desde entonces al compás de las nuevas corrientes historiográficas, incidiendo en todos los ámbitos sociales estudiados por la Historia, incluido el Periodismo.
