Hardcover. Condition: Good+. 1st Edition. Oversized hardcover, x + 133 pages, numerous colour and b&w illustrations in text, NOT ex-library. Gently used, book is clean and bright, untanned, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps. Issued without a dust jacket. -- It has been 30 years since Meyer-Schwickeraff presented his classical monograph on Licht Koagulation. Utilizing his recently constructed Zeiss Xenon photocoagulator, he introduced numerous potential applications and techniques for the treatment of anterior as well as posterior segment ocular diseases. [.] One of the most important contributions to the widespread use of photocoagulation treatment of the posterior segment occurred 15 years later with the introduction of fluorescein angiography. This diagnostic adjunct for the pathophysiological study of macular diseases singularly documented the nature of exudative and angioproliferative diseases and served as a guide to photocoagulation therapy. Initially, laser photocoagulation of the posterior segment was exclusively performed by retinal specialists who had more extensive experience and training in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina. Gradually, the bulk of primary laser photocoagulation therapy of macular diseases has shifted to the general ophthalmologist. Recently trained ophthalmologists have had the benefit of individualized instruction, 'hands-on' laser courses, and supervised laser treatments enabling them to perform uncomplicated photocoagulation applications. The purpose of this book was to provide a reference source for ophthalmologists who have not had the opportunity to have such formal training. It was particularly designed for residents-in-training and for ophthalologists from countries where retinal consultations are not always readily available. The treatment guidelines suggested by the authors were based on clinical trials when such data was available. Suggestive laser management guidelines for patients with diseases which have not been studied in the past by clinical trials because of complexity or rarity, were based on the authors' experience and judgment. (Lawrence A. Yannuzzi, Preface).
