Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Book Club Edition. Damage to front cover bottom right side of book.Anna Kowalczek arrived on Capitol Hill at the start of World War II, old Senator Seab Cooley of South Carolina predicted, "Mark my words, that little lady is going to own this town someday." And thirty years later, Anna almost does: as widow of amiable but foredoomed Senator Gordon Hastings of Texas-as columnist-as television personality-as major political figure-and above all as founder and publisher of the Washington Inquirer and head of a media empire that stretches from coast to coast. How Anna clawed her way to the top of the Washington heap from a modest Polish home in Punxsutawney, PA., is related in this engrossing novel of the Washington scene Allen Drury knows so well and has described so powerfully in his previous political novels. His tale of Anna, her rise and those who either successfully accompanied her or fell by the wayside is, as Seab Cooley also remarked, "some skeerazzle." Here you will meet the people who had to live with Anna and the four horsemen (or, as Anna would put it now, "horsepersons") who came as eager youngsters to the wild and wacky Washington of World War II and stayed to become some of the town's top journalists: Ed Macomb, the narrator, who serves loyally as managing editor of the Inquirer until Anna with the greatest love and reluctance slits his throat professionally and kicks him out- Fat and faithful Bessie Revere, who receives the same treatment yet also remains loyal- Talbot Farson, who survives Presidential enmity, a Congressional investigation and a dubious political past to retain his triumphant grip on the news as editor of the Inquirer- Unhappy Gordon Hastings, married to one of Washington's most ambitious women and eventually destroyed- Young Gordie and Lisa, Anna's children, the only two people their mother couldn't dominate. And, always, Anna herself, brilliant, ruthless, all-conquering-and yet somehow pathetic and vulnerable, likable and touching in spite of the whim-of-iron qualities that make her at the same time one of Washington's most successful women and one of its more formidable monsters. ark my words, that little lady is going to own this town someday." And thirty years later, Anna almost does: as widow of amiable but foredoomed Senator Gordon Hastings of Texas- as columnist- as television personality- as major political figure- and abov (illustrator).…

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Large Size Billionaire genius Genoa Greeves never got over the shocking death of her favorite teacher, Bennett "Dr. Ben" Alston Little, murdered execution-style and stuffed into the trunk of his Mercedes-Benz. No arrests were ever made, no killer charged for the brutal crime. Fifteen years later, the high tech CEO reads about another execution-style murder; this time the victim is a Hollywood music producer named Primo Ekerling. There is no obvious connection, but the case is eerily similar to Little's and Genoa feels the time is right to close Dr. Ben's case once and for all-offering the L.A.P.D. a substantial financial "incentive" if justice is finally served for Little. Lieutenant Peter Decker resents having to commit valuable manpower to a fifteen-year-old open case simply because a rich woman says "Jump!" Sill, the recent murder of Primo Ekerling does bear a disturbing resemblance to Little's case, even though two thug suspects are currently behind bars for the Ekerling murder. Decker can't help but wonder about a connection. His first phone calls are to the two primary investigators in the Little case, retired detectives Calvin Vitton and Arnie Lamar. Lamar is cooperative, but Vitton is not only reluctant to talk, he winds up dead of a suspicious suicide twelve hours later. Plunging into this long-buried murder, Decker discovers that even though the two slayings are separated by a decade and a half, there is still plenty of greed, lust, and evil to connect the dots. Decker's team of top investigators not only includes his favorite homicide detectives, Scott Oliver and Marge Dunn, but also his newly minted Hollywood detective daughter, Cindy Kutiel, whose help proves to be invaluable. His wife Rina Lazarous, continues to be his backbone of support, offering a cool, rational outlook despite her growing concern for her husband's welfare and safety. Rina's worries and fears begin to build at a fevered pitch as past and present collide with a vengeance, catapulting an unsuspecting Peter Decker closer and closer to the edge of an infinite dark abyss. r. Eliza Orzeszkowa (June 6, 1841 - May 18, 1910), was a Polish novelist and a leading writer of the Positivism in Poland during foreign Partitions. She was born to a noble Pawlowski family in Milkowszczyzna, and died in Grodno (now Hrodna, Belarus) nearby. At the age of sixteen, Eliza married Piotr Orzeszko, a Polish nobleman twice her own age, who was exiled to Siberia after the January Uprising of 1863. They were legally separated in 1869. She married again in 1894, after a 30-year-long loving relationship with Stanislaw Nahorski who died a few years later. [Translated by Jaroslav Rozvoda] [Czechoslovakia (Czech and Slovak: Ceskoslovensko, Cesko-Slovensko) was a sovereign state in Central Europe that existed from October 1918, when it declared its independence from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, until its peaceful dissolution into the Czech Republic and Slovakia on 1 January 1993].
