John Yewdall (1795-1856) was a toll collector at Hunslet, on the outskirts of Leeds. ODNB says that the title poem, which is about life at the turnpike gate, i…s 'written in the style of Byron's Don Juan', but this is a bit misleading as the rhyme scheme is different (only six lines to a stanza) and the lines have only four feet rather than five - and, although there is some attempt at humour, there is of course, none of the brilliance of Byron. Other poems are the usual mixture of occasional poems, fables, epistles and acrostics. Copac locates only four copies: BL, Bodleian, Leeds and York. Jackson, Annals of English Verse, p. 534; Johnson, Provincial Verse, 999.
