Vlase Zanalis was a remarkable Greek-Australian artist known for his profound exploration of Indigenous Australian culture and the Australian landscape. Born on the Greek island of Kastellorizo in 1902, he migrated to Western Australia in 19141. His work gained national acclaim with "The Birth of a Nation" in 1934, but it was his post-1948 work that truly defined his legacy. Zanalis' art often depicted the Australian outback and Indigenous themes, inspired by his visits to places like Forrest River Mission in the East Kimberley and various cattle stations in the Kimberley region. He became one of the first non-Aboriginal artists to value and portray the depth of Indigenous Australian culture1. Neville Green and John N Yiannakis have both written about Zanalis' contributions to art and culture. Neville Green is known for his work on Australian art history, while John N Yiannakis has focused on Zanalis' unique approach to Indigenous themes and his impact on the Greek-Australian community.
