Eine Falle: Wer sich mit seinen Ideen nicht auf Parteilinie befindet, wird verhaftet. Auch der Vater der 14-jährigen Zhang Yihe, Verkehrsminister in der Mao-Regierung, wird als Rechtsabweichler aller politischen Ämter enthoben. 1970, während der Kulturrevolution, wird die Musikwissenschaftlerin Zhang (Schwerpunkt Pekingoper) zu 20 Jahren Straflager verurteilt. 1979, drei Jahre nach Maos Tod, wird sie unvermittelt freigelassen - ihre eigene Tochter erkennt sie nicht wieder. Entlassungsgrund: »Gegen Zhang Yihe liegt nichts vor.« In den 50er und 60er Jahren war China für die Welt eine riesige terra incognita. Ganz China schien im blauen Ameisenlook zu marschieren und die kleine rote Mao-Bibel zu schwenken. Doch wie lebten und dachten die Menschen wirklich Zhang Yihe beschreibt in ihrem Buch die Schicksale der sogenannten Rechtsabweichler im Umkreis ihrer Familie in der Zeit des »Großen Sprungs nach vorn«: Sie haben im Westen studiert und sind glühende Patrioten, viele sind Demokraten, die meisten aber überzeugte Kommunisten. Und sie gelten unversehens als politisch unliebsame Vertreter einer Schicht von Intellektuellen und Künstlern, die die Kulturrevolution als anachronistisch vernichten will. Zhang stellt die Partei mit diesen in der Regel von der Staatswillkür gebrochenen Biografien an den Pranger - und sie fordert: Zeugnis, Anerkennung, Wiedergutmachung, Gedenken und - Veränderung. Bis heute wurden viele Opfer der Kulturrevolution nicht rehabilitiert, gibt es keine Entschuldigung für die sinnlosen Leiden, wurde die maoistische Vergangenheit nicht kritisch aufgearbeitet.
