Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Conventional wisdom applauds those who chase their dreams. But what happens when that dream turns into a mistake? Especially when the odds are so long and the cost is so great. "What Luck" is a tragic tale about a failed stand-up comic who should have stayed in college. For years, Daryl Carroll has been living the life of a starving artist; honing his craft and playing by the rules. But his full-scale dedication and ample talents aren't enough, and the big career break never materializes. As hope of ever achieving his dream fade, desperation and paranoia settle in. His drive to succeed turns into obsession and his motivation turns to revenge.Author Dwight York writes from experience. His stand-up comedy career has spanned more than 30 years. His struggles to remain relevant and earn a living have been lifelong. It's said that stand-up comedy is a brutal business and the "lucky break" is a requirement for success. In his new novella, York exposes the dark side of the comedy world and explores the question of luck. It's the story of a lonely loser whose battle becomes one against his own better judgment; that he's doomed, forever to be a failure. Wraps. Condition: Very good overall. Interesting real estate items, where New Zealand law informs NY law. Three items pertaining to real estate transfer and records in New York, including a pamphlet with a section pertaining to the difficulties of doing a title search in New York City and with a recommendation for the admirably practical aspects of the newly enacted New Zealand Land Transfer Act (1870 New Zealand Act). The author proposes using a system based on keeping records of the titles to land as opposed to an index of names of title owners, and commends the 1870 New Zealand Act as setting up the best system for doing so (pp 17 -25). Olmstead notes the difficulty of doing a City title search due to the huge increase in the number of records. The pamphlet titled 'The West Side Association of the City of New York, Transfer of Title to Real Estate, A Lecture', by Dwight W. Olmstead. 8vo, 28pp. Printed paper wrappers, chipped at edges, early owner signature top of front wrapper. OCLC: 44729510 records 1 copy, in microfilm at the New York Public Lib. An unopened bag of 50 uncommon coins/tokens, plus a selection of 5 and 25 cent denomination coins, all but one of which are in stapled tiny bags. As new. Their motto: "In Facts We Trust." Tokens produced by the Nuwaubian Nation during its time in rural Georgia, where Dwight York and his followers set up a Black Nationalist compound/theme park in 1993. The complex blend of ideologies and influences of the group included Islam, UFO contactee, New Age, neo-Egyptian, Native American, Black Nationalist, and even sovereign state citizen concepts-- the latter tendency leading to their confrontation with federal authorities, as sovereign citizens believe they are not subject to income tax or most laws. The names for the group and their compounds changed numerous times. A number of hip-hop groups have reputedly been influenced by Nuwaubian ideas over the years. Their compound was raided May 8, 2002, and York eventually imprisoned on charges of racketeering and child molestation. While quite obscure, the Nuwaubians remain one of the most intriguing and unusual American new religious movements of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
