Contact seller5-star sellerA pamphlet providing a timetable for transit and a program of musical entertainment for Sunday, June 27, 1880, at Manhattan Beach. The pamphlet also features two attractive color lithographs by Donaldson Brothers, one an illustration of Manhattan Beach and the other a map of transit in lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. The entertainment was provided by Gilmore's Grand Concerts, led by Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore (1829-1892). Gilmore was born in Ireland and immigrated to Boston around age 18, where he led several popular bands, including the 24th Massachusetts Volunteers during the Civil War; during this time, he pseudonymously wrote the lyrics to "When Johnny Comes Marching Home." After the war he led two massive "Peace Jubilee" festivals in Boston, then moved to New York City to lead the 22nd Regiment's band. In New York he rented Madison Square Garden, hosting concerts and various contests and exhibitions. Massively popular in the US and Europe, Gilmore played at Manhattan Beach from 1880 until his death in St. Louis in 1892. . Small stain to lower right corner with some foxing, one small unrelated pencil manuscript marking; excellent. Folded four-page pamphlet measuring 3 ½ x 5 ¾ inches.…

Contact seller5-star sellerCondition: Overall very good to excellent. Three trade cards advertising Starin's Glen Island, considered the US's first amusement park, located just off New Rochelle in Westchester County. Shipping magnate John H. Starin (1825-1909) opened the park in 1879. It consisted of six islands connected by covered walking bridges; the cards advertise attractions including a zoo, dancing, boating and bathing, bowling, and especially the "Old Fashioned Rhode Island Clam Bake Served on the arrival of each Steamer" from New York City. It would later also include a natural history museum, aviary and greenhouse, and exhibits themed around Germany, India, Japan, the Philippines, and more. The trade cards feature attractive lithographs of boats on Long Island Sound and women swimming and relaxing by the shores. Glen Island was part of the late nineteenth-century transformation of Long Island Sound and the Westchester shore into a recreational landscape for New York City day-trippers, reached by excursion steamers and marketed through colorful advertising. Starin's combination of steamboat travel, themed amusements, bathing, animals, music, food service, and picturesque grounds anticipated the more elaborate amusement parks that would define metropolitan leisure at Coney Island and elsewhere. Three cards, two measuring 3 x 5 inches and one 5 ? x 3 ? inches. Worn especially at corners with occasional small stains; two with small unrelated manuscript verso; one with likely glue residue verso. Lithographs bright and attractive.…

Add to basketAn attractive Gothic Revival item, tastefully printed in red and black. Printed on nine 13 x 9 cm panels, laid down on a cloth backing opening out to 39.5 x 28 cm; in original 14 x 10 cm printed card cover, with engraved title on front, within a gothic arch. In fair condition: aged and worn in worn and rubbed covers, with small white circular label on front board. Arranged, appropriately enough, in four columns headed: Name of Style; Reign A.D.; Illustrative Examples; Characteristics. The seven styles are given as: Saxon; Norman; Transition or Semi-Norman; Early English or Lancet; Decorated; Perpendicular Florid or Plantagenet; and Debased. Uncommon: the only copies on COPAC at the British Library, Bodleian and Rylands, with the only other copy of any other edition a copy of the fifth edition of 1844 at York Minster. According to Bedford's entry in the Oxford DNB, such youthful illustrations of 'the ecclesiastical architecture of London and York' as this item are thought to have 'brought him to the attention of the celebrated publishers and lithographers Day & Sons, whose innovative and costly production techniques placed them at the forefront of printing technology. Bedford's role at Day & Sons was to transfer the drawings and designs of artists intended as illustrations directly on to the lithographic stone in preparation for printing, a procedure that was both exacting and highly regarded.'.…
