Because Georgia h…ad perhaps the most to lose by a declaration of independence, reactions within the colony to Britain's increasingly restrictive policies were more restrained than in the more liberal northern colonies. This lingering attachment created in Georgia a Loyalist sentiment that, while fervent, nevertheless attracted fewer adherents than did the movement for independence. This conflict was a major factor in Georgia's heatedly-debated support of the Declaration of Independence and in the seven years of war that followed. This is the story of the lives and political careers of three men -- Button Gwinnett, Lyman Hall, and George Walton -- who attained prominence within that struggle and who acquired undying fame by representing Georgia in the congress that adopted the Declaration of Independence.
