The first published account of exploration in Australia by Jess Young (pp116 - 141), titled 'Recent Journey of Exploration Across the Continent of Australia; Its Deserts, Native Races, and Natural History'. Young joined Ernest Giles during his 4th Australian expedition, making important botanical discoveries and collections. Giles' expedition departed South Australia in May 1875, and arrived in Perth, Western Australia in November. Specimens of new plant species collected include Eucalyptus salubris, Eucalyptus youngiana and Eremophila youngii, all from near Queen Victoria Spring. Other content includes: 'Inter-Oceanic Ship Canal across the American Isthmus', by Rear Admiral Daniel Ammen (with a folding world map showing sea routes from Europe through the isthmus and on to Australia); 'Method of Approaching New York Harbor by Sounding', proposed by Lieut. Trudelle (includes 5 soundings charts); and 'Arctic Meeting - Plan for Exploration of the Arctic Regions', by Capt. H. W. Howgate. 8vo, lxii, 298pp. Red gilt buckram library binding, spine a bit faded, spine ends slightly chipped, short diagonal tear in cloth top of spine, not affecting title.
