Youngerman's memoir recounts an extraordinary career that began in 1926 at Paramount Studios, where he started as a prop man and gradually became a central figure in Hollywood's evolving production culture. The book traces his rise through the studio system during its golden age, offering firsthand observations of filmmaking practices, labor dynamics, and the personalities who shaped the industry. A major portion of the narrative focuses on his pivotal role in the Screen Directors Guild, where he became Executive Secretary in 1950. Youngerman details the Guild's transformation into the modern Directors Guild of America, documenting negotiations, organizational battles, and the growing professionalization of directors' rights and working conditions. His perspective is both administrative and personal, capturing the behind-the-scenes evolution of Hollywood's labor structures. The memoir functions as both a historical record and an insider's chronicle of nearly a century of American filmmaking?told by someone who witnessed the shift from silent films to television-era production, the decline of the studio system, and the rise of the DGA as a powerful creative institution.

(Directors Guild of America Oral History Series) Series (B&W photographs) Based on interviews with the subject conducted by Ira Skutch and David Shepard, this covers Youngerman's "career in the motion picture business [which] spanned the 1920s through 1940s at Paramount Studios, followed by over fifty years with the Directors Guild of America," where he was hired as Executive Secretary in 1950, when it was still known under its original name, the Screen Directors Guild. "Just ten short years later, he had not only personally supervised the construction of the Guild headquarters, located at 7950 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, but had also negotiated the merger between the SDG and the Radio and Television Directors Guild to form the Directors Guild of America." At the time the book was published in 1995, Mr. Youngerman was still serving the Guild, as the Executive Secretary/Treasurer of its Educational and Benevolent Foundation; he died later in the year.
