First printing, no others stated. Hermann Zapf (1918 2015) was a German typeface designer and calligrapher who lived in Darmstadt, Germany. His career in type design spanned the three most recent stages of printing: hot metal composition, phototypesetting (also called cold type), and digital typesetting. His two most famous typefaces, Palatino and Optima, were designed in 1948 and 1952, respectively. Most items ship with tracking numbers and(generally over $15.00) jacket protectors if applicable. Each plate features a quotation about Freedom (by Hegel, Kant, Maugham, The Book of Common Prayer, Wendell Willkie, and Salvador de Madariaga, expressed in Zapf's exemplary letterforms. Released in 1980 after ten years of close collaboration between Professor Hermann Zapf in Darmstadt and Philip L. Metzger of the Crabgrass Press in Kansas City. A typographic tour de force that features quotations on art, science and the human condition. Prose, poetry, anagrams, and palindromes in English, German, French and Japanese comprise an elaborate type specimen. Showcases Zapf's typefaces as well as those of Gudrun Zapf von Hesse and a few others. Printed on a variety of vintage and handmade papers from France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States. Most broadsides are printed in two or more colors. This copy is number 18 of 99 copies printed, which sold out immediately. Signed by Zapf and Metzger. Prospectus, note on the box and spare label are included. The only flaw is a bump to the left lower corner of the frame, resulting in a very small crack to the plexiglass face.
