Cloth. Condition: Sehr gut. 109 p., Ill. Der Buchrücken ist lichtbedingt leicht ausgeblichen, vereinzelte Bleistift-Anstreichungen, ansonsten ein sehr gutes und sauberes Exemplar. / The spine is slightly faded due to light, occasional pencil markings, otherwise a very good and clean copy. -- CONTENTS -- Preface -- Foreword -- Translated text of "Kadensho" -- Notes -- Illustrations -- OKINA -- KIYOTSUNE -- EGUCHI -- ZÔ-ON-NA. -- IZUTSU -- KO-TENJIN -- SOTOWA-KOMACHI -- JÔ -- (Extract:) PREFACE: The importance to Japanese drama of Ze-ami's Kadensho is what the importance of Aristotle's Poetics would be to European drama if it had been written by Aeschylus. Just as Aeschylus created the Greek tragedy out of the dithyramb and the tentative beginnings of Thespis, so did Ze-ami create the No out of the Sarugaku, the Dengaku, and other earlier forms. Aeschylus did not write a book on tragedy, but Ze-ami wrote twenty-three treatises on Nô, of which the Kadensho is the most important. My three colleagues are Nô artists, and they have a thorough knowedge of English. The actual translating into English was done by them, my task being for the most part confined to watching out for those little slips which are inevitable when one is not writing in one's native tongue. Any attempt at stylistic finish was thwarted by an inflexible adherence to exactly what Ze-ami said, and, as far as was attainable, to the way in which he said it. In spite of the enormous difference, in patterns of thinking and in ways of expression, between Japanese and the Indo-European languages, I believe that this translation, however graceless, comes as near to what Ze-ami said as it would be possible to do in intelli- gible English.
