Cette édition de l'Abrégé de Justin des Histoires Philippiques de Trogue Pompée propose une mise à jour scientifique complète du sujet. Une copieuse introduction générale au début du Tome I (pu…blié en 2016) s'est proposée de résoudre en particulier l'épineux problème de la biographie de Trogue Pompée et de la composition de son uvre. Sur un point fondamental, celui de l'orientation idéologique de l'ouvrage, la présente édition permet de réfuter l'interprétation qui prévalait précédemment et qui faisait de l'historien voconce un adversaire de Rome et/ou d'Auguste. Elle établit en particulier le caractère complémentaire des Histoires Philippiques avec l'Histoire romaine de Tite-Live et l'intention de l'auteur de faire miroiter l'espoir d'une renaissance de Rome dans le cadre de la respublica restituta augustéenne. Cette orientation idéologique de l'uvre est illustrée par les nombreuses notes littéraires et historiques de cet ouvrage. L'éditeur (Bernard Mineo) a établi son texte à partir de la collation de 17 manuscrits, dont 10 sont systématiquement cités dans l'apparat critique. Le stemma proposé tient compte des dernières données de la recherche. Une traduction moderne de l'Abrégé de Justin a ainsi pu être mise au point. Il n'existait jusqu'à présent aucune édition dans la Collection des Universités de France, et la dernière traduction imprimée remonte à 1936 ; l'unique traduction française récente (2003) est une édition publiée uniquement en ligne par M.-P. Arnaud Lindet. Le Tome III, qui constitue l'ultime volume de cette édition, comprend les Livres XXIV à XLIV de l'Abrégé des Histoires Philippiques de Trogue Pompée par Justin, et recouvre la période allant de la ligue des cités grecques contre les Étoliens en 280 av. J.C. à la restitution en 20 av. J.-C. des aigles romaines capturées lors de la bataille de Carrhes et à la victoire des armées d'Auguste sur les Cantabres en 19 av. J.-C. Y sont aussi dépeints l'ensemble des conflits qui opposèrent alors entre eux les États du monde grec ainsi que le déclin moral des différents royaumes « philippiques », issus du partage de l'empire d'Alexandre, et que les Modernes qualifient plutôt « d'hellénistiques ». Le récit de Justin met également en relief l'irruption de Rome dans l'espace géopolitique du bassin oriental de la Méditerranée et retrace les progrès de son hégémonie jusqu'à la victoire diplomatique d'Auguste sur les Parthes en 20 et celle remportée sur les Cantabres en 19, deux succès signalant la pacification du monde sous les auspices augustéens. Ce volume constitue également une source de première importance pour les guerres de Rome contre la Macédoine et pour l'histoire du peuple juif. Justin consacre une partie importante de son récit aux guerres contre Mithridate et nous a préservé uerbatim le fameux discours, rapporté au style indirect, que Trogue Pompée avait prêté à ce personnage au moment où il s'engageait dans la lutte contre Rome. De nombreuses notes littéraires ont été rédigées par l'éditeur (Bernard Mineo) pour accompagner le texte. Des notes historiques très riches ont été ajoutées par Giuseppe Zecchini, Professeur d'Histoire romaine à l'Université Catholique de Milan. Une abondante bibliographie à jour sur les sujets étudiés dans ce Tome III est également proposée, ainsi qu'un index général couvrant les trois volumes de l'édition.
