Spesso era impossibile scegliere la propria vita; quasi sempre si era costretti ad obbedire alle dure regole dell'emigrazione e solo i più tenaci riuscivano a trovare lavoro nei campi e condurre una vita quasi normale. Il romanzo è composto da quattro episodi, il cui filo conduttore è l'attività svolta da una squadra di uomini con una trebbiatrice, che nel periodo che ci interessa veniva noleggiata dalle masserie della Sicilia orientale per trebbiare il grano dopo la mietitura. Comunque il momento della trebbiatura, proprio perché coinvolgeva un gran numero di persone, era senza dubbio quello più atteso e ha ispirato la creazione dei quattro episodi, attraverso la sua cultura, le sue tradizioni e le sue storie, che ancora oggi costituiscono la base dell'attuale società contadina siciliana.
