Die von ihm von…1823 bis 1867 geführte Campesche Buchhandlung zählt als später daraus hervorgegangenes Verlagshaus Hoffmann und Campe seither zu den namhaften deutschen Buchverlagen. Mit Ludwig Börne, Karl Gutzkow, Friedrich Hebbel und nicht zuletzt Heinrich Heine förderte Campe gezielt Autoren des "Jungen Deutschland" - sie alle hat er entdeckt und ihre Texte erstmals veröffentlicht, darunter auch das "Lied der Deutschen" von Hoffmann von Fallersleben; der Wortlaut der späteren deutschen Nationalhymne wurde 1841 erstmals bei Hoffmann und Campe publiziert. Julius Campe trug mit seinem verlegerischen Wirken zum Gedeihen einer demokratischen Kultur in Deutschland bedeutend bei. Er starb am 14. November 1867 in Hamburg.
