From Preface: This is an anthology of short fiction created during the first forty years of the People's Republic of China. The observant reader will notice that only eight works, or fiver percent of this collection, were written during the first thirty years of that period. The greater portion of the volume was created during the last decade. This disproportionate distribution is a reflection of the tragedy that befell modern Chinese literature. Re-reading Chinese fiction created between 1949 and 1976 one finds little of true artistic worth; works that do not bear witness to some page of history or ism are all too scarce. The reason behind this phenomenon is the fact that for a long period prior to 1976, Chinese literature was given a mission for which it was not intended. After the previous regime was toppled, building a new society became the order of the day. Many strategists of the time, with only a superficial understanding of the nature of literature, recognized its power to persuade. Furthermore, they were convinced that this power of persuasion was its only function, and therefore it must become a tool for revolutionary propaganda and serve politics directly. Its artistic value was often ignored. The problem went much deeper. The value of literature was measured against the principles and standards set by the various levels of leadership, which, in time, became policy and even law. Those who dared contradict these guidelines were severely criticized. Thus from 1949, more accurately from 1942 onwards, literature became a tool first to wrest power and then to consolidate it.
