Sumptuous gold-printed flyleaves (showing a bucket being emptied on a fire, adorned with portraits and armorial vignettes). Edges of the spine a bit worn, but a very good copy. 25th commemoration of the Amsterdam professional fire department with a large and ambitious book, its binding full of furious fire and water, designed by Johann Georg van Caspel (1870-1928). He started as a portraitist and poster artist, but became an architect later. Many nice illustrations. The flyleaves, vignettes and attractive initials (sporting various useful attributes like hosepipes, rattles and telegraph poles) were also the work of Van Caspel. Also present in this book is the author Arnold ALETRINO, who worked as a company doctor for the fire department. He is present in two photos (p. 179 and 191), the latter a good example of a lively photo vignette. With a technical overview of the organization of the fire brigade to date, spirited reports of the work of the fire department, beautiful pictures of technical equipment and a catalog of the fire department library. In all, an attractive and content rich book, a source of animated beauty and amusement.
