Early German traveller in Egypt, Palestine, Syria and Lebanon. He worked as a Franciscan missionary in the Holy Land, where he led the Franciscan mission as Commissioner General of the Order. On the basis of his experience, especially from his third journey to Palestine in 1658, he compiled this work which was printed for the first time in Munich in 1661. It is, in fact, an early geographic guide to the holy places. With descriptions of Jerusalem, Palestine and other cities including Antioch and Damascus, as well as Cyprus, Malta and Rhodes. In the first part, Zwinner describes Jerusalem and Palestine, while in the second he reports over 23 famous pilgrimage places (presumably based on Quaresmios "Peregrinationes"), the third part is on those cities that do not belong to Palestine (Damascus, Antioch, etc.). Various copper plates with views of Jerusalem, Jaffa, the Holy Grave, Mount of Olives, Bethlehem, etc. and plans. Bibliographic references: Graesse VI, 523; Tobler 107.
