"Ende'Sommer-Semester 1912 hat Zyndel in Basel promoviert mit einer Dissertation "Über Quarzzwillinge mit nichtparallelen Hauptachsen"; aus den Jahren 1908-13 liegen ferner einige kleinere krystallographische Abhandlungen vor, die sich gleichfalls meist mit seltenen Zwillingsverwachsungen beim Quarz befassen. Durch alle diese Arbeiten war Zyndel in kurzer Zeit der beste Kenner der Zwillingsverwachsungen des Quarzes geworden; in seiner Dissertation war es ihm gelungen, zu den bis dahin bekannten 8 Zwillingsgesetzen 5 neue hinzuzufügen und ausserdem auf zwei weitere bis jetzt hypothetische Verwachsungsmöglichkeiten hinzuweisen, zu denen er durch geometrische Erwägungen geführt worden war. Es war seine Absicht, später vor allem auch den innern Bau der nach verschiedenen Gesetzen verzwillingten Individuen zu prüfen, um damit zu allgemein gültigen Resultaten über die orientierende Wirkung der beim Wachstum wirkenden Partikelkräfte zu gelangen.
