In his introduction to this reprint of a book that first appeared in 1945, as the war in Europe was near its end, Michael Harris, remarks that it was strange, given the shortage of paper and other difficulties, that a book devoted to the British locomotives then in service should be published. The author Brian Reed is mentioned only in the introduction to the reprint and the original title was "Modern Locomotive Classes." In this reprint edition the extended sub-title is: "Principal Big Four Locomotive Classes As At 1945." Engines include some dating back to 1911 while others, built during WWII, including some in the USA, are described. 62 pages including index., each of the almost 60 locomotives described has a photo and profile plan, with measurements, above and below the technical text. Laminated colour pictorial covers VG+, ditto text block, colour pictorial DJ repeats hard covers and also VG+.
