The recruited their older brother, Albert Chase McArthur, a former apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright, as head architect. Actors Clark Gable and Carole Lombard often stayed there and the Tequila sunrise cocktail was invented there. It later became part of Waldorf Astoria Hotels and Resorts. Warren McArthur, Jr., and brother Charles McArthur along with John McEntee Bowman, the entrepreneur behind the Biltmore Hotel chain, opened the Arizona Biltmore on February 23, 1929. La Reine Victoria avait apprécié y séjourner. L'hôtel a fermé ses portes le 30 octobre 2010. Depuis sa faillite, le château a été racheté par des investisseurs russes qui ont décidé de le réhabiliter. Il a été acheté par l'homme d'affaires russe Evgeny Lebedev en 2012, qui l'a transformé en un hôtel-restaurant de luxe. Le chantier a été remporté par deux architectes locaux, Daniele Marques et Iwan Bühler. Le nouveau projet prévoit la transformation des 31 chambres initiales du château en 20 chambres immenses et luxueuses. De nouveaux bâtiments modernes vont être construits afin d?accueillir 40 nouvelles chambres et suites ainsi qu?un Spa et des salles de séminaires. Le château se situe à côté d?une forêt, la Gütschwald. L'histoire de Château Gütsch : Le Gütsch est une colline à l'ouest de la ville de Lucerne. Il y a longtemps, des gardes ont été incendiés par des gardes pour prévenir la ville en temps de guerre ou de tout autre danger. La tour de Gütsch a été construite en 1590 comme point final des fortifications de la ville et a perduré jusqu'à un incendie en 1888. En 1859, Burkhard Pfyffer achète le terrain à la ville et obtient le droit d'exploiter une auberge sur le Gütsch. L'auberge a été achetée par Ignaz Businger en 1879 et agrandie pour devenir un hôtel. Avec la construction de la Gütschbahn en 1884, il devint plus facile pour les clients de se rendre à l'hôtel. Une grande partie de l'hôtel a été complètement détruite lors du grand incendie de 1888. En 1901, l'hôtel reçoit son apparence actuelle de château de conte de fées avec ses tours et ses oriels "à la Neuschwanstein". Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale et jusqu'en 1921, l'hôtel Gütsch resta fermé. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il devait accomplir son service militaire et héberger à son tour des réfugiés, des émigrants de retour et des prisonniers de guerre. En 2010, la ville de Lucerne a accordé au nouveau propriétaire, Alexander Lebedev, l'autorisation d'agrandir et de rénover l'hôtel. En 2014, l'hôtel a rouvert ses portes après une rénovation en profondeur. Les dernières rénovations de 2014 portaient en particulier sur la préservation de détails historiques tels que le stuc au plafond, les sculptures sur bois, les parquets et les boiseries peintes à la main. Ephemera. This is a lot of material related to a Wisconsin area psychic from the 1930's. Went by Mystic Myrah, and was also Myrah & Lorenz. It appears her real name was Myrah Lorenz. This material apparently was at one time from her collection, as there is some correspondence addressed to her. All the material is from the mid 1930's. Includes the following: 1) A flyer/broadside advertising the appearance of Mystic Myrah "The Psychic Marvel" at the Liberty Theatre in Milwaukee; 2) A single folded sheet of The Morning Reminder of Kaukauna, WI that includes an ad for Mystic Myrah at the Vaudette Theatre; 3) A flyer advertising Myrah at the Grand (a theater somewhere in Wisconsin); 4) A flyer advertising Myrah at The Lyric (perhaps in Milwaukee, or Stevens Point?); 5) A letter from the Janesville Gazette to Myrah, referencing a check sent for payment; 6) A small card from Uphoff;s restaurant of Madison, WI, with a menu on one side, and an ad for the appearance of Myrah & Lorenz at the restaurant; 7) A small card soliciting questions to be asked at an appearance of Myrah at The Avalon Theatre in Milwaukee; 8) A small typed note from an Eau Claire, WI fan to Myrah & Lorenz, commenting on a prediction made that came true; 9) A hotel bill in the name of Mr. & Mrs. L & M Lawrence (we're assuming Lorenz), dated 1933. From reporting by WTOP: WASHINGTON â" With less than two weeks before the election, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took time out from campaigning to officially open his new luxury hotel in Washington, D.C. a few blocks from the White House. The Wednesday morning ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Trump International Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue was billed as a business trip. But a political atmosphere reigned: The security was Secret Service-tight, chanting protesters swarmed the entrance outside and Trump, himself, speaking in the hotel's "presidential ballroom" shortly after 11 a.m., turned his development of the "most coveted piece of real estate in Washington, D.C." into a pitch for running the country. "My theme today is five words: Under budget and ahead of schedule," Trump said of the Trump Organization's efforts to redevelop the historic building after winning a 60-year lease from the federal government in 2012 to redevelop the historic building. "That's what we did." Trump's daughter, Ivanka, who has played a role in his campaign, also spoke at the ceremony. On February 6, 2012, GSA announced that it had chosen The Trump Organization as the potential redeveloper of the Old Post Office Building. The journals were written by Miss Anita Cronk [from Chicago?]. The first journal, begun July 12th 1929, was kept in aÂleatherÂ"Album", containing ~ 140 pages of mss entries. Interspersed among each days entries are photographs, postcards, telegrams, tickets, maps,Âmenus, programs & other interesting ephemeral items that document the trip. At the rear are collected autographs & inscriptions from fellow passengers, as well as a list of hotels frequented during the trip. The second 'journal', of 40 pages written on loose S.S. "Albertic" stationery, documents the trip back home, again with associated ephemera from the trip, again, such asÂprograms, telegrams, tickets, photographs &Âmenus. The first journal starts on July 12th 1929 when Miss Cronk and her friends arrive in Montreal. The ship sailed on 7 a.m. on July 13th and the next 20 pages of the journal document the eight day trip to Ireland. On Monday July 22nd the ship docked in Galway, Ireland. After spending four days in Ireland the ship left for Liverpool, England. After almost seven days in England the ship sails for Brussels. After spending a few days in France Miss Cronk and her friends take a train to Germany were they spend several days and then on to Austria, Italy and back to France. In this interesting journal Anita Cronk records the modes of travel, the hotels, the restaurants, the scenery and the people that she meets and also documents the travels with photographs and postcards and other numerous types of ephemera that are pasted into the album. The second journal starts on August 19th, 1929 is written on White Star Line S.S. "Albertic" stationary andÂdocumentsÂthe trip home. Interspersed among the pages are several "programs" documenting the activitiesÂaboardÂthe ship. There are also some photographs, tickets and menus. Also included with the two journals is the R.M.S. "Doric" passenger list that also includes a map of the journey.  An interesting accounting from this young lady's shipboard activities & continental travel, just before the advent of the crippling 1929 Depression which would severely curtail the number of such journeys. Journal et mémoires manuscrits inédits d?un agent de la Trésorerie de l?Armée engagé au mois de Juillet 1870, témoin de la débâcle de Sedan, du Siège de Paris et de la Commune. Récit personnel de "l'Année terrible", il ne signe pas son manuscrit vraisemblablement destiné à être publié. « Un aide d'ambulance qui entend prononcer mon nom me demande si je suis de Valognes et si je suis parent d'un de ses amis du même nom. Je lui réponds que je suis de Falaise, il m'apprend alors que Piquentin est avec eux ». L'ambiguïté syntaxique de la seule allusion à son nom dans le texte, nous laisse supposer néanmoins qu'il pourrait s'agir d'un dénommé Piquentin originaire de Falaise en Normandie, âgé de 33 ans cette année-là. Les rédactions successives ont été conservées, du premier jet en trois parties, intitulé «Ma campagne de 1870 » (150 feuillets à l?encre rouge et noire) dont plusieurs passages et développements ne furent pas repris dans la version "achevée" mise au propre sans titre ni parties dans 7 cahiers numérotés (81 ff.) distincts du reste du corpus manuscrit.« Le 5 août, nommé de la veille agent de la trésorerie de l'armée attaché au grand parc d'artillerie de l'Armée du Rhin, je me rends sans délai au Ministère de Finances, bureau du Trésor et Postes. Je reçois un bienveillant et gracieux accueil de la part de ces MM. de la Trésorerie, nous sommes là deux divisions de payeurs, l'une pour la (?) d'artillerie l'autre pour le grand parc. Nous recevons les instructions nécessaires pour notre entrée en campagne, nous touchons une somme de quinze cents francs, et l'ordre de pourvoir à notre équipement le plus promptement possible. Avec cette somme il faut se fournir un cheval et son harnachement, deux uniformes, petite et grande tenue, pour le moment la seule tenue de campagne est de rigueur ». Engagé pour conduire les fourgons du trésor, trier et distribuer les correspondances, payer les soldes des troupes, son témoignage est précieux dès la défaite de Sedan le 1er septembre 1870 : « J?étais en avant sur le trottoir, notre payeur était derrière nous et mon collègue à côté de lui en bas du trottoir. J'entends un bruit sec et mat (?). C'était notre payeur qui la tête enlevée par un éclat d'obus gisait près de nous. (?) c?est vraiment heureux qu'il y ait armistice puisqu'armistice il y a, car le moindre obus lancé par les Prussiens dans une telle foule produirait une tuerie horrible, tous sont tassés dans les rues, hommes, chevaux et voitures. La pluie se met à tomber, alors c'est une vraie fange, les débris de toutes sortes, mêlées aux déjections des animaux couvrent le pavé d'un talus de dix centimètres au moins [2 septembre]. Si nous n'avons pas payé ce qui nous reste d'argent, nous serons forcés de le donner aux Prussiens, c'est eux qui auront le fond de notre caisse, qui se trouve considérablement allégé [3 septembre]. La reddition des comptes sera faite aux agents du Trésor allemand à dix heures du matin à la succursale de la Banque de France (?) à la sous préfecture le payeur en chef de l'armée de Châlons et toutes les divisons du Trésor et Postes se préparent à rendre le fonds de leur caisse aux agents du Trésor Prussien. Sur le perron un général français prisonnier (Besson) formant groupe avec quelques officiers allemands, nous apostrophe très vivement. Voilà dit-il les payeurs qui ont préféré rendre leur caisse aux ennemis plutôt que de payer nos malheureux prisonniers en ouvrant les bureaux à 6h du matin. (?) Le payeur divisionnaire (Castella) dit que non seulement nous payons malgré la capitulation depuis 6h du matin mais que lui pour son propre compte n'avait à rendre que quelque monnaie, sur une somme de 300.000 francs ».Revenu de Sedan avec 73 agents du Trésor il reprend son activité tandis que « le Quartier Général du Trésor et Postes va à Neuilly à la Porte Maillot, près de l'État Major du général Dunot établi dans le restaurant Gillet, installler à son tour ses bureaux et son service. Nous y sommes provisoirement réunis. L'incendie que je voyais hier de ma fenêtre a détruit complètement le château de St Cloud, ce sont les obus lancés du Mont-Valérien sur les positions ennemies qui y ont mis le feu (13 octobre) ». La dernière partie consacrée à la Commune de Paris fut d?abord rédigée à « l?encre rouge, car c'est avec du sang qu'il faudrait écrire ces pages sanglantes, ces incendies, ces ruines, et toutes les horreurs commises par ces bandes de misérables aussi lâches et d'aussi peu de convictions qu'ils se sont montrés cruels et fourbes ». Il convient d?ailleurs de privilégier la lecture de ces feuillets de «premier jet» fortement élagués dans la version définitive. L?exécution le 18 mars du général Lecomte qu?« il m'a été donné de connaître personnellement pendant la campagne » le saisit. Il fut lui-même emprisonné neuf jours en conséquence de ses activités. Il voit l'avancée des Versaillais dans Paris depuis la rue de Sèvres où il habite et assiste à la répression des Communards. « Épilogue. Lundi 29 mai. Je veux être impartial, certes je suis loin d'avoir partagé les vues de la Commune dès le commencement, je n'ai jamais cru possible la réussite d'un mouvement aussi mal dirigé que l'était celui des fédérés mais ces démonstrations après coup lorsque l'on sent la force derrière soi et que l'on a plus rien à craindre sont une lâcheté ».Source manuscrite et inédite d'un "payeur" de l'armée du Rhin, exceptionnelle par son ampleur et la qualité de ses descriptions.

First and only edition; a rare and lavish production describing a major project for Saddam Hussein which never came to fruition. The mosque formed part of Hussein's early initiative to rebuild and beautify Baghdad, with Baghdadi urban planner Rifat Chadirji appointed to oversee architectural planning and preparations for the 7th Non-Aligned Movement Summit in 1982. Rifat Chadirji (1926-2020) is widely regarded as the father of modern Iraqi architecture. He was a pivotal cultural figure in Baghdad between the 1950s and 70s. He made his name when General Abd al-Karim Qasim commissioned him to design several memorials in Baghdad of which two were built: the Freedom Monument and the Monument to the Unknown Soldier (both 1959, the latter destroyed in 1982 to make way for a statue of Hussein). He fell out of favour during the presidency of Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, and in 1978 was imprisoned for life at Abu Ghraib. However, Saddam Hussein held Chadirji's abilities in very high regard, and after taking power in 1979, had him released and appointed counsellor to the mayoralty of Baghdad, responsible for architectural planning and for the NAM Summit (1980-82). The master plan comprised several large-scale projects, which Chadirji was instrumental in commissioning and co-ordinating: in 1982 the Presidency established a State Grand Mosque Committee chaired by Chadirji: "To revive [Baghdad's] pioneering, historical, spiritual and intellectual role. the fighting President and Leader Sadam Hussein. directed his attentions towards the building of the Grand Mosque [to] embody the continuance of the cultural heritage and highlight the aspirations of the nation so that it may act as a distinctive religious instructor to the State" (pp. 6-7). Despite his opposition to the regime at the time, Chadirji remained insistent that his work was always for the country, the people, in line with the principles of his concept of "International Regionalism"; "I had absolute power. I was the consultant that everyone came to for advice. I was the one who made a difference and my work was never questioned" (MEA). The Committee invited 22 Arab and overseas firms to enter the competition, of these, seven were asked to submit plans - Iraqi architects Kathan al Madfai, Mohamed S. Makiya, and Maath Alousi, the Japanese Minoru Takeyama, Palestinian Rasem Badran, Catalan Ricardo Bofill, and the American practice Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown. Entrants were required to identify the various area specialists, including those in Islamic history and architecture, with whom they intended work. The site, away from the city centre on Rabia Street, was required to include a prayer hall for 30,000, a women's prayer space for 3,000, prayer yards, a dedicated library for 100,000 books and 50,000 manuscripts, conference rooms, a restaurant, teaching institute, accommodation for 40 visiting imams, shops and parking. Plans were submitted on the deadline in January 1983 and Chadirji, who had stepped down as chair in November of the previous year, joined a three-person adjudication committee alongside architectural historians Dogan Kuban, noted for his painstaking restoration of the 12th-century Kalenderhane Mosque in Istanbul, and Stephano Bianca, the Swiss expert on the Arab urban environment. They unanimously awarded first place to Badran, with Bofill and Alousi invited to give support. The introduction to the document sets out details of the brief and establishes the context in terms of the history of the mosque in Islam and Arab civilization; this is followed by outlines of the seven schemes, with the architects adumbrating their distinct philosophies in terms of approach, symbolism, history, and materials, accompanied by detailed models, plans, elevations and sections. However, after this extended period of planning, the Iran-Iraq War intervened, the NAM Summit was moved to New Delhi, and Saddam Hussein declined to take forward the committee's recommendations. Chadirji was offered a fellowship at Harvard which enabled him to settle in the United States where he remained for more than a decade before moving to London; his brief return to Iraq in 2009 "saddened" him. Perhaps the main legacy of the State Mosque project was the fillip given to the career of Rasem Badran by Chadirji's personal invitation to become involved. Badran was subsequently responsible for Riyadh's Great Mosque and accompanying Old City Center Redevelopment - which won the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995, the King Abdul Aziz Historical Centre and King Abdul Aziz Foundation for Research and Archives - and Saudi Ministry of Culture complex as part of the Al Bujairi redevelopment. In recognition of his architectural achievements in the country, in 2022 Badran was granted Saudi nationality. Today we arrived here in Aix, which is a most interesting place of about 35,000 inhabitants, founded 124 B.C. and once the old capital of old Provence, the country of the troubadours. Here there are fountains everywhere with different kinds of mineral water, hot or cold, right in the street. People come with bug buckets to get a supply. It is a little out of the season and everything is tranquil, sedate, and somber. It is very beautiful and very mild. The trees are green deep green olives and grapes are growing, and there is loads of sunshine. Here Emile Zola was born, and Paul Cezanne, the greatest painter of modern times. And yet we are only about 20 miles away from Marseille, which is so utterly different that you would hardly believe the two cities belonged to the same country, much less the same department , which, by the way, is named Bouches du Rhome meaning the mouths of the Rhone , as the Rhone is very big, very powerful and empties into the Mediterranean through eight months. We stayed three days in Marseille and I got ill from the filthy water. I took a third of a glassful in my wine the first day, being very thirsty, and that little bit was enough to upset my stomach completely. However, we managed to take in most of the city. It is beyond all doubt one of the most notorious holes in the world. An international seaport, full of Americans, Turks, Arabs, Greeks, Spaniards, Senegalese, bums, thieves, fakers, pimps, whores, grand whores, and whatnot. The whole city smells bad and it contains about a half million people. The sea itself is wonderful, and the boats, etc. A marvelous spot, surrounded by volcanic mountains that look white, blue, gray and purple in different shades of light. But the city itself is a cesspool. I don t know how to describe it. You know how some of the worst streets on the East Side look. Well, imagine that and then increase the misery, the stench, the poverty, the degradation, the vice, the disease, etc. Last night we took a walk through the red light district what is really old Marseille and we were damned lucky that we had an interpreter with us or we might not have come out of the damned city alive. The whores and pimps just crowded around us like buzzards (despite the fact that June was along) and started pulling us one way and another, each one trying to drag us into their particular den. The street was full of dumber sailors, stevedores, floaters of all nationalities, and they were amused at our predicament. For the first time since being here in Europe I was thoroughly scared. Such a hole. A filthy narrow street, on each side, little cubby holes exposed to public view, in which you could see a bed and a dresser with a kerosene oil lamp on it. In front of the open door sat the mistress of the place, calling out to all comers to step inside. White, yellow, black, old, crippled, diseased it made no difference. And when you try to pass them by they grab your hat or tug at you by the coat tail or make a circle around you until you go mad. I was never so god damned sore, disgusted and bewildered in my life.
