MERRITT, Elizabeth. James Henry Hammond, 1807-1864. Johns Hopkins University Studies in Historical and Political Science. Series XLI, no. 4. Baltimore: Johns Hopkins Press, 1923. 1st ed. 8vo, 151pp. Original printed wraps. A crisp, partially unopened, near fine copy. The first, and for many years, the only biography of the South Carolina politician, who served as U.S. Representative (1835-36), governor of South Carolina (1842-44), and U.S. Senator (1857-60). Hammond was a fierce advocate of slavery, "King Cotton," states rights, and the death penalty for abolitionists. In 1860, he backed away from his earlier support of secession, arguing that it was not in the best interests of the South. He thereafter retired from politics and died of natural causes in 1864. "Well-researched" -- CWB II, 76.
