First American edition. 8vo, publisher's original red cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, in the original dustjacket. xxv, [1], 365, [3] pp. The book in near fine condition, the dustjacket with some mellowing and edgewear. First published in 1930 Musil's "Der Mann Ohne Eienschaften" is considered one of the greatest, and longest, German novels of the first half of the century. It is the work for which Musil is best known and to which he dedicated a large portion of his life. The work remains unfinished, as he died while still working on it. The story was set at the time of the decline of Vienna and Emperor Franz Josef's power. Rather than focus on history however, Musil concentrates on the conceptual development of his characters. It has been described as expressionistic, satirical, and as the last work of the classical tradition. It was not translated into English until this printing, beginning in 1953. The translators Wilkins and Kaiser, dedicated much time to this work as well, as it was published over a span of seven years. The three volumes had the complete translation of the finished portion of Musil's work. A fourth volume containing unfinished sketches and unrevised variants was to be published. This particular volume has a foreword by Wilkins and Kaiser and it is here that the main theme becomes explicit and Musil's talent and imagination are more fully developed. In this way, the previous two volumes are a prologue to the problem set in this novel--that of love and belief. Or, the idea that "love, in whatever form it is experienced, is an approximation only: as it were, an experimental approach to living in a condition that he calls "Other'." Further, "becoming one with the 'Other' is an experience more complex, more complete, and therefore more desirable than any union that can be physically enacted. A human 'other'.is an image of an 'Other' that is nameless." (Wilkins) Consequently, Musil is not only exploring human relations but relations to abstract truths and perhaps, God. His work reflects a preoccupation with these questions that was central to European philosophers such as Heidegger and Levinas, among others, and anticipated the philosophical and literary concerns with God and the relation to Others and otherness of this millennium.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st. First Edition in English, published by Seeker & Warburg in 3 volumes, 1953, 1954, 1960. Originally published in German between 1932 and 1942. Original gilt green and brown cloth in all three volumes. First dust jacket, volume 1 is green, 2nd and 3rd volumes are blond. Dust jacket has edgewear; very minor soil, else very good. Musil's 3 volume trilogy is considered a masterpiece of Modern Fiction. The first two volumers were completed in his lifetime, the thrid volume, unpublished at the time of his death, composed of all his manusripts for the final volume of the trilogy. Only his premature death in Geneva in 1942, a victim of the Anschlauz of Hitler and Nazism. His novels were censored by the Nazi regime of Hitler from 1933-1945. He would have become a Nobel laureate if not for his premature death. Robert Musil (6 November 1880 - 15 April 1942) was an Austrian philosophical writer. His unfinished novel The Man Without Qualities (German: Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften) is generally considered to be one of the most important and influential modernist novels. Hardcovers. Top edges moderately foxed, other edges very slightly, otherwise fine in fine attractive dustjackets (black spines, with front cover background using three different colours--light green/orange/yellow, to set off the author/title lettering). Sterling price intact on all flaps. A long and masterful work which "chronicles the life of a Viennese intellectual in 1913-14; it encompasses Musil's reflections on the sense of cultural disintegration and spiritual crisis treated by other writers of his day. Musil faced financial ruin due to inflation in the 1930s: he fled Berlin and Nazi-occupied Vienna and died in penury in Switzerland. His work was little read until the early 1950s, when critics reestablished his important place in modern fiction".(International Dictionary of 20th Century Biogaphy--Vernoff & Shore). Consists of Vol 1: "A Sort of Introduction. The Like of it Now Happens (I)." Containing a 35pp foreword by the translators. Vol 2: "The Like of it Now Happens (II)". Vol 3: "Into the Millennium. (The Criminals)". Translated by Eithne Wilkins and Ernst Kaiser. Since the third volume wasn't published in English until 1960, sets of the complete 3 volume set are rather uncommon. These books, heavy as a set will cost more to send overseas, than any default postage rate noted ($65 US an estimate for Airmail, tracked).

Some novelists excel at giving the reader the emotional feel of a character's mind (Dickens), others at the sensuous feel of a character's mind (Flaubert). Musil is wonderful at both" (Smiley). The first two volumes of Musil's unfinished masterpiece, Der Mann ohne Eigenschaften, were originally published in Germany in 1930 and 1933; the third volume was first published privately in Switzerland in 1943, the year following the author's death.
