Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Carved from a piece of wood by the old carpenter Geppetto, the puppet Pinocchio comes to life and immediately starts to misbehave. But while this beloved character has achieved literary immortality, the novel has been widely misunderstood. Pinocchio has a penchant for lying, to be sure, but it's when he avoids going to school that he repeatedly gets into trouble. The Adventures of Pinocchio is thus not a cautionary tale about lying but an unusually timely fable for our increasingly authoritarian times--a story about the importance of education and of preventing others from pulling our strings. This effervescent new translation captures the antic spirit that makes the mischievous, egotistical, and easily distracted Pinocchio a late nineteenth-century prototype for the likes of Bart Simpson. Featuring copious annotations informed by the translators' deep knowledge of Italy, it reveals the novel to be not only a subversively entertaining children's book but also a sophisticated satire reflecting the author's concern for the social inequality of his time and his belief that duty to others is at the core of our humanity. For more than seventy-five years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 2,000 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.A revelatory new annotated edition of the most translated Italian book in the world--the basis for two new major motion pictures- a Netflix animated version co-directed and co-written by Guillermo del Toro and voiced by Ewan McGregor, Cate Blanchett, and Tilda Swinton, and a Disney Plus live-action version directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, Cynthia Erivo, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Lorraine Bracco, and Keegan-Michael KeyA Penguin ClassicCarved from a piece of wood by the old carpenter Geppetto, the puppet Pinocchio comes to life and immediately starts to misbehave. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. GROSE, Francis engraved by Godfrey (illustrator). Copper plate print published December, 1774. The engraving measures 12cm x 16.25cm including plate mark - over all with text 23cm x 33cm. Engraved by Godferey for Grose's Antiquities of England and Wales from a drawing by Grose in 1774. Note: Beaumont Palace, built outside the north gate of Oxford, was intended by Henry I about 1130 to serve as a royal palace conveniently close to the royal hunting-lodge at Woodstock (now part of the park of Blenheim Palace). Its former presence is recorded in Beaumont Street, Oxford. Set into a pillar on the north side of the street, near Walton Street, is a stone with the inscription: "Near to this site stood the King's Houses later known as Beaumont Palace. King Richard I was born here in 1157 and King John in 1167". The "King's House" was the range of the palace that contained the king's lodgings. Henry passed Easter 1133 in the nova aula, his "new hall" at Beaumont in great pomp, celebrating the birth of his grandson, the future Henry II. Edward I was the last king to sojourn in Beaumont officially as a palace, and in 1275 he granted it to an Italian lawyer, Francesco Accorsi, who had undertaken diplomatic missions for him.[2] When Edward II was put to flight at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314, he is said to have invoked the Virgin Mary and vowed to found a monastery for the Carmelites (the White Friars) if he might escape safely. In fulfilment of his vow he remanded Beaumont Palace to the Carmelites in 1318. In 1318, the Palace was the scene for the beginnings of the John Deydras affair, in which a royal pretender, arguing that he was the rightful king of England, claimed the Palace for his own. John Deydras was ultimately executed for sedition. When the White Friars were disbanded at the Reformation, most of the structure was dismantled and the building stone reused in Christ Church and St John's College. The engraving here shows the remains of Beaumont Palace, the last of which were destroyed in the laying out of Beaumont Street in 1829. LETTER ONE (April): Three pages, 12mo, good condition. He discusses their respective illnesses, him recuperating "at Minehead. The district round about Minehead is very stimulating, & inspiring. Watchet, a romantic port near by, immediately took my fancy. I tried to do some watercolours here but my efforts met with indifferent success. I learned later that Watchet is the traditional place from which Coleridge's 'Ancient Mariner' sailed." A fellow artist ('Scott') 'assailed' him when he was 'back to school', saying, "he was down at Chelsea , & there was quite a group of artists there now. Which sounded to me as though anyone outside the 'group' were not artists." He quotes a poem or hymn about exclusivity. He continues, "Scott was doing some interesting work, as he always manages to do." He praises the nurses at the Nursing Home. LETTER TWO (16 June, Amsterdam) Two Pages, 4to, good condition. "You will see that I have got as far as the above on my peregrinations. I first had a week in Antwerp, & saw the Rubens in the Beaux-Arts Museum, & had a shot at copying a little cupid. It was moderately successful [.] Then I went to The Hague & saw the Mauritshaus Museum. Unfortunately copying is not allowed there in the summer months, however, I took pencil notes". He then discusses "a lovely Velasquez" at length, of which he bought a photograph. Rembrandt and Rubens then enter his narrative, paintings he can describe as "masterpieces", and later the Rijksmuseum (Vermeer etc) and other locations of art collections (Dutch art summarised in a paragraph). To Berlin next. LETTER THREE (Urbino, 17 August) He is enthusiastic about the countryside around Urbino ("the birthplace of Raphael"), quoting an old guidebook. He suggests there are too many places of interest and is keen to go home. He discusses Tintoretto and Titian, and has seen Durer, Cranach etc. He encourages Rees in a project ("gold"?). "Don't be afraid of altering." He concludes with a comment on the Italians "immaculate" dress. "I fancy I cut a poor figure as regards that, for my clothes after travelling about have heaps of creases but not of the right sort." Hooper seems to be remembered for his friendship with Duncan Grant as much as anything.

D'Ancona 672) First edition as a reissue of the edition "printed for S. Hooper; H. Webley; W. Nicol; and S. Bladon", 1766, with a cancel title page and an additional dedication to David Garrick. John Northall, army officer and travel writer, "entered the service as a gentleman cadet in the Royal Regiment of Artillery on 1 July 1741 and was promoted to lieutenant fireworker on 1 April 1742. He served under Thomas Pattison with the Royal Artillery in Flanders in 1742, and was promoted second lieutenant on 1 April 1744. He was at the battle of Fontenoy on 11 May 1745, and became first lieutenant on 3 October 1745, captain-lieutenant on 24 March 1752, and captain on 1 October 1755. In February 1752 he went to Minorca, and thence to Livorno. He was recorded in Capua on 1 April 1752. Instead of making the usual tour of Italy, he visited the principal cities of Tuscany and, after a cursory visit to Rome, went to Naples. Then, after a more lengthened stay in Rome, he went to Loreto, Bologna, Venice, Mantua, Parma, Modena, and returned to Livorno, whence he sailed for Genoa. From Genoa he went by sea to Villafranca, and on by land to Marseilles. He died in 1759. An account of his Italian tour was published posthumously in July 1766, Travels through Italy; Containing New and Curious Observations on that Country, but the work has been criticized as following closely J. G. Keysler's Travels (1740; Eng. trans. 1756)."
