Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The modern subject of differential forms subsumes classical vector calculus. This text presents differential forms from a geometric perspective accessible at the advanced undergraduate level. The author approaches the subject with the idea that complex concepts can be built up by analogy from simpler cases, which, being inherently geometric, often can be best understood visually. Each new concept is presented with a naturalpicture that students can easily grasp; algebraic properties then follow. This facilitates the development of differential forms without assuming a background in linear algebra. Throughout the text, emphasis is placed on applications in 3 dimensions, but all definitions are given so as to be easily generalized to higher dimensions. The second edition includes a completely new chapter on differential geometry, as well as other new sections, new exercises and new examples. Additional solutions to selected exercises have also been included. The work is suitable for use as the primary textbook for a sophomore-level class in vector calculus, as well as for more upper-level courses in differential topology and differential geometry.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 172 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Mathematical Analysis: Foundations and Advanced Techniques for Functions of Several Variables builds upon the basic ideas and techniques of differential and integral calculus for functions of several variables, as outlined in an earlier introductory volume. The presentation is largely focused on the foundations of measure and integration theory. The book begins with a discussion of the geometry of Hilbert spaces, convex functions and domains, and differential forms, particularly k-forms. The exposition continues with an introduction to the calculus of variations with applications to geometric optics and mechanics. The authorsconclude with the study of measure and integration theory ¿ Borel, Radon, and Hausdorff measures and the derivation of measures. An appendix highlights important mathematicians and other scientists whose contributions have made a great impact on the development of theories in analysis. This work may be used as a supplementary text in the classroom or for self-study by advanced undergraduate and graduate students and as a valuable reference for researchers in mathematics, physics, and engineering. One of the key strengths of this presentation, along with the other four books on analysis published by the authors, is the motivation for understanding the subject through examples, observations, exercises, and illustrations.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 420 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -The subjects of stochastic processes, information theory, and Lie groups are usually treated separately from each other. This unique two-volume set presents these topics in a unified setting, thereby building bridges between fields that are rarely studied by the same people. Unlike the many excellent formal treatments available for each of these subjects individually, the emphasis in both of these volumes is on the use of stochastic, geometric, and group-theoretic concepts in the modeling of physical phenomena.Volume 2 builds on the fundamentals presented in Volume 1, delving deeper into relationshipsamong stochastic geometry, geometric aspects of the theory of communications and coding, multivariate statistical analysis, and error propagation on Lie groups. Extensive exercises, motivating examples, and real-world applicationsmake the work suitable as a textbook for use in courses that emphasize applied stochastic processes or differential geometry.Stochastic Models, Information Theory, and Lie Groups will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working in applied mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 464 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -An important question in geometry and analysis is to know when two k-forms f and g are equivalent through a change of variables. The problem is therefore to find a map ¿ so that it satisfies the pullback equation: ¿\*(g) = f.In more physical terms, the question under consideration can be seen as a problem of mass transportation. The problem has received considerable attention in the cases k = 2 and k = n, but much less when 3 ¿ k ¿ n¿1. The present monograph provides thefirst comprehensive study of the equation. The work begins by recounting various properties of exterior forms and differential forms that prove useful throughout the book. From there it goes on to present the classical Hodge¿Morrey decomposition and to give several versions of the Poincaré lemma. The core of the book discusses the case k = n, and then the case 1¿ k ¿ n¿1 with special attention on the case k = 2, which is fundamental in symplectic geometry. Special emphasis is given to optimal regularity, global results and boundary data. The last part of the work discusses Hölder spaces in detail; all the results presented here are essentially classical, but cannot be found in a single book. This section may serve as a reference on Hölder spaces and therefore will be useful to mathematicians well beyond those who are only interested in the pullback equation. The Pullback Equation for Differential Forms is a self-contained and concise monograph intended for both geometers and analysts. The book may serveas a valuable reference for researchers or a supplemental text for graduate courses or seminars.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 448 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -Both refining and extending previous publications by the authors, the material in thismonograph has been class-tested in mathematical institutions throughout the world. Covering some of the key areas of optimal control theory (OCT)¿a rapidly expanding field that has developed to analyze the optimal behavior of a constrained process over time¿the authors use new methods to set out a version of OCT¿s more refined¿maximum principle¿ designed to solve the problem of constructing optimal control strategies for uncertain systems where some parameters are unknown. Known as a ¿min-max¿ problem, this type of difficulty occurs frequently when dealing with finite uncertain sets. The text begins with a standalone section that reviews classical optimal control theory. Moving on to examine the tent method in detail, the book thenpresents its core material, which is a more robust maximum principle for both deterministic and stochastic systems. The results obtainedhave applicationsin production planning, reinsurance-dividend management, multi-model sliding mode control, and multi-model differential games.Using powerful new tools in optimal control theory, this book explores material that will be of great interest to post-graduate students, researchers, and practitioners in applied mathematics and engineering, particularly in the area of systems and control.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 456 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This revised and expanded second edition is an in-depth study of the change point problem from a general point of view, as well asa further examination of change point analysis of the most commonly used statistical models. Change point problems are encountered in such disciplines as economics, finance, medicine, psychology, signal processing, and geology, to mention only several. Morerecently, change point analysis has been foundin extensive applicationsrelated toanalyzing biomedical imaging data, array Comparative Genomic Hybridization (aCGH) data, and gene expression data. The exposition throughout the workis clear and systematic, with a great deal of introductory material included. Different models are presented in each chapter, including gamma and exponential models, rarely examined thus far in the literature.Extensive examples throughout the text emphasize key concepts and different methodologies used, namely the likelihood ratio criterion as well asthe Bayesian and information criterion approaches. New examples of change point analysis in modern molecular biology and other fieldssuch as finance and air traffic controlare added in this second edition. Also included are two new chapters on change points in the hazard function and other practical change point models such as the epidemic change point model and a smooth-and-abrupt change point model. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware -This generalization of geometry is bound to have wide spread repercussions for mathematics as well as physics. The unearthing of it will entail a new golden age in the interaction of mathematics and physics. E. Witten (1986) The idea that the moduli space Mg of curves of fixed genus 9 - that is, the algebraic variety that parametrizes all curves of genus 9 - is an intriguing object in its own right seems to have come slowly. Although the para meters or moduli of curves surface in Riemann's famous memoir on abelian functions (from 1857) and in work of Hurwitz and later were considered by the geometers of the Italian school, for a long time they attracted attention only in the special case 9 = 1, where they were studied in the framework of the theory of modular functions. The work of Grothendieck, who in the early sixties pointed the way towards the right approach, and the subsequent construction (in 1965) of the moduli space Mg by Mumford were the first foundational work, to be followed by the construction of a compactification Mg by Deligne and Mumford in 1969. The theorem of Harris and Mumford saying that for 9 sufficiently large the space Mg is of general type was the first big insight in its structure.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 580 pp. Englisch.

For outsiders, especially scientists who rely on physicist's theories in their own fields, this situation is disquieting. Moreover, many recall their introduction to quantum mechanics as a startling, if not shocking, experience. A molecular biologist related how he had started in theoretical physics but, after hearing the ideology of quantum mechanics, marched straight to the Reg istrar's office and switched fields. A colleague recalled how her undergraduate chemistry professor religiously entertained queries from the class - until one day he began with the words: 'No questions will be permitted on today's lecture.' The topic, of course, was quantum mechanics. My father, an organic chemist at a Midwestern university, also had to give that dreaded annual lecture. Around age 16, I picked up a little book he used to prepare and was perplexed by the author's tone, which seemed apologetic to the point of pleading. It was my first brush with the quantum theory. 6 Eventually, I went to graduate school in physics. By then I had acquired an historical bent, which developed out of an episode in my freshman year in college. To relieve the tedium of the introductory physics course, I set out to understand Einstein's theory of relativity (the so-called Special Theory of 1905, not the later and more difficult General Theory of 1915). Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -HIS book presents a generalized state-space theory for the analysis T and synthesis of finite horizon suboptimal Hoo controllers. We de rive expressions for a suboptimal controller in a general setting and propose an approximate solution to the Hoo performance robustness problem. The material in the book is taken from a collection of research papers written by the author. The book is organized as follows. Chapter 1 treats nonlinear optimal control problems in which the cost functional is of the form of a quotient or a product of powers of definite integrals. The problems considered in Chap ter 1 are very general, and the results are useful for the computation of the actual performance of an Hoo suboptimal controller. Such an application is given in Chapters 4 and 5. Chapter 2 gives a criterion for the evaluation of the infimal Hoc norm in the finite horizon case. Also, a differential equation is derived for the achievable performance as the final time is varied. A general suboptimal control problem is then posed, and an expression for a subopti mal Hoo state feedback controller is derived. Chapter 3 develops expressions for a suboptimal Hoo output feedback controller in a very general case via the solution of two dynamic Riccati equations. Assuming the adequacy of linear expressions, Chapter 4 gives an iterative procedure for the synthesis of a suboptimal Hoo controller that yields the required performance even under parameter variations. 140 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -It would be difficult to overestimate the importance of stochastic independence in both the theoretical development and the practical appli cations of mathematical probability. The concept is grounded in the idea that one event does not 'condition' another, in the sense that occurrence of one does not affect the likelihood of the occurrence of the other. This leads to a formulation of the independence condition in terms of a simple 'product rule,' which is amazingly successful in capturing the essential ideas of independence. However, there are many patterns of 'conditioning' encountered in practice which give rise to quasi independence conditions. Explicit and precise incorporation of these into the theory is needed in order to make the most effective use of probability as a model for behavioral and physical systems. We examine two concepts of conditional independence. The first concept is quite simple, utilizing very elementary aspects of probability theory. Only algebraic operations are required to obtain quite important and useful new results, and to clear up many ambiguities and obscurities in the literature. 168 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -From the original hard cover edition:In the modern age of almost universal computer usage, practically every individual in a technologically developed society has routine access to the most up-to-date cryptographic technology that exists, the so-called RSA public-key cryptosystem. A major component of this system is the factorization of large numbers into their primes. Thus an ancient number-theory concept now plays a crucial role in communication among millions of people who may have little or no knowledge of even elementary mathematics. Hans Riesel's highly successful first edition of this book has now been enlarged and updated with the goal of satisfying the needs of researchers, students, practitioners of cryptography, and non-scientific readers with a mathematical inclination. It includes important advances in computational prime number theory and in factorization as well as re-computed and enlarged tables, accompanied by new tables reflecting current research by both the author and his coworkers and by independent researchers. The book treats four fundamental problems: the number of primes below a given limit, the approximate number of primes, the recognition of primes and the factorization of large numbers. The author provides explicit algorithms and computer programs, and has attempted to discuss as many of the classically important results as possible, as well as the most recent discoveries. The programs include are written in PASCAL to allow readers to translate the programs into the language of their own computers. The independent structure of each chapter of the book makes it highly readable for a wide variety of mathematicians, students of applied number theory, and others interested in both study and research in number theory and cryptography. 484 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -HIS book presents a generalized state-space theory for the analysis T and synthesis of finite horizon suboptimal Hoo controllers. Assuming the adequacy of linear expressions, Chapter 4 gives an iterative procedure for the synthesis of a suboptimal Hoo controller that yields the required performance even under parameter variations.Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 140 pp. Englisch.

The authors conclude with the study of measure and integration theory - Borel, Radon, and Hausdorff measures and the derivation of measures. One of the key strengths of this presentation, along with the other four books on analysis published by the authors, is the motivation for understanding the subject through examples, observations, exercises, and illustrations. 420 pp. Englisch.

This small volume arose under quite differ ent circumstances, namely within the context of reworking the mathematical foundations of computer science. I have been very lucky in finding gifted students who agreed to work with me and chose, for their Ph. D. theses, subjects that arose from my own attempts 1 to create a coherent mathematical view of these foundations. The result of this collaborative work is presented here in the hope that it does justice to the individual contributor and that the reader has a chance of judging the work as a whole. E. Engeler ETH Zurich, April 1994 lCollected in Chapter III, An Algebraization of Algorithmics, in Algorithmic Properties of Structures, Selected Papers of Erwin Engeler, World Scientific PubJ. I Historical and Philosophical Background Erwin Engeler In the fall of 1928 a young American turned up at the Mathematical Institute of Gottingen, a mecca of mathematicians at the time; he was a young man with a dream and his name was H. B. Curry. He felt that he had the tools in hand with which to solve the problem of foundations of mathematics mice and for all. His was an approach that came to be called 'formalist' and embodied that later became known as Combinatory Logic. 156 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This unique two-volume set presents the subjects of stochastic processes, information theory, and Lie groups in a unified setting, thereby building bridges between fields that are rarely studied by the same people. Unlike the many excellent formal treatments available for each of these subjects individually, the emphasis in both of these volumes is on the use of stochastic, geometric, and group-theoretic concepts in the modeling of physical phenomena.Stochastic Models, Information Theory, and Lie Groups will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and practitioners working in applied mathematics, the physical sciences, and engineering. Extensive exercises, motivating examples, and real-world applications make the work suitable as a textbook for use in courses that emphasize applied stochastic processes or differential geometry. 464 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -From the original hard cover edition:In the modern age of almost universal computer usage, practically every individual in a technologically developed society has routine access to the most up-to-date cryptographic technology that exists, the so-called RSA public-key cryptosystem. A major component of this system is the factorization of large numbers into their primes. Thus an ancient number-theory concept now plays a crucial role in communication among millions of people who may have little or no knowledge of even elementary mathematics.Hans Riesel¿s highly successful first edition of this book has now been enlarged and updated with the goal of satisfying the needs of researchers, students, practitioners of cryptography, and non-scientific readers with a mathematical inclination. ¿Springer Basel AG in Springer Science + Business Media, Heidelberger Platz 3, 14197 Berlin 484 pp. Englisch.

Modem communication techniques enable us to transmit and reconstitute images without needing to know a specific verbal sequence language such as the Morse code or Hungarian. Inter national traffic signs use international image symbols which are not An image language differs specific to any particular verbal language. from a verbal one in that the latter uses a linear string of symbols, whereas the former is multidimensional. Architectural renderings commonly show projections onto three mutually perpendicular planes, or consist of cross sections at different altitudes capable of being stacked and representing different floor plans. Such renderings make it difficult to imagine buildings compris ing ramps and other features which disguise the separation between and consequently limit the creative process of the architect. floors, Analogously, we tend to analyze natural structures as if nature had used similar stacked renderings, rather than, for instance, a system of packed spheres, with the result that we fail to perceive the system of organization determining the form of such structures. 248 pp. Englisch.

The main idea is that such foliated (sub) manifolds can be decom posed when the dimension of the leaves (generators) is large. The methods of investigation are mostly synthetic. The work is divided into two parts, consisting of seven chapters and three appendices. Appendix A was written jointly with V. Toponogov. Part 1 is devoted to the Riemannian geometry of foliations. In the first few sections of Chapter I we give a survey of the basic results on foliated smooth manifolds (Sections 1.1-1.3), and finish in Section 1.4 with a discussion of the key problem of this work: the role of Riemannian curvature in the study of foliations on manifolds and submanifolds. 300 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -An important question in geometry and analysis is to know when two k-forms f and g are equivalent through a change of variables. The problem is therefore to find a map phi so that it satisfies the pullback equation: phi\*(g) = f. In more physical terms, the question under consideration can be seen as a problem of mass transportation. The problem has received considerable attention in the cases k = 2 and k = n, but much less when 3 k n-1. The present monograph provides the first comprehensive study of the equation. The work begins by recounting various properties of exterior forms and differential forms that prove useful throughout the book. From there it goes on to present the classical Hodge-Morrey decomposition and to give several versions of the Poincaré lemma. The core of the book discusses the case k = n, and then the case 1 k n-1 with special attention on the case k = 2, which is fundamental in symplectic geometry. The book may serveas a valuable reference for researchers or a supplemental text for graduate courses or seminars. 448 pp. Englisch.
