Softcover. Condition: Good. While the nun beat little Bridget nightly for wetting the bed, Bridget wished, "If only the rod had been round." Perhaps a round rod wouldn't hurt as much as sharp edges of the rod leaving welts and bruises up and down her back and legs. At her school 250 miles from home, nuns tried to teach indigenous children they were savages with no soul, but Bridget kept her spirit. In the appendix are Prime Minister Stephen Harper's 2008 apology in Parliament to Canada's indigenous people and response by National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, Phil Fontaine. One of few published indigenous autobiographers, Bridget tells her story with grace and dignity. Excitement of her father as North-West Mounted Policeman in 1880's; rich culture and history of her mother's Dene' nation, and descriptions of Fort Simpson and Fort Good Hope in NWT provide background. An agent who cared, Papa, the Famous Flynn Harris, spoke 17 languages when Commissioner of Treaty 11 along Mackenzie River's 2,500 miles. About the Bridget Harris Volden middle of eleven children cared for parents and then younger siblings left without support after her father's death. Bridget faced her fears finding work and living arrangements in Edmonton. Abandoned by her first husband in strange surroundings of New York City, Bridget learned new work and coping skills. Invited by her sister to Minneapolis, Bridget left her past behind. After marriage to Bill Volden, Bridget discovered Jesus' love and help from AA to fight alcohol. She gave back to her community by helping found The American Indian Bible Fellowship that she directed in downtown Minneapolis for ten years. At 90 Bridget is still actively contributing her father's Irish humor, her mother's gentleness, and the rich history and culture of her Dene' nation.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. After the success of two best-selling novels, William Harris continues to fascinate readers by calling upon his intimate knowledge of Savannah people, history, and surroundings. WASSAW SOUND brings back beloved characters and weaves a tale of intrigue in the Low Country. Spanning from the 1950's to the present, the story is centered around an actual event in which a hydrogen bomb was jettisoned into Wassaw Sound in February 1958 by a damaged B-47 bomber. While WASSAW SOUND revolves around the story of the Tybee Bomb, it is about much more. It speaks of the power of lifelong friendships, the pain of unrequited love, the fruitlessness of unfettered hatred, and the magnificence of faith and its power to overcome. Most people are familiar with the buildings and parks in the historic section of Savannah, but few know the beauty and splendor of the marshes, rivers, and islands that lie to the east of the city. In WASSAW SOUND Harris takes the reader on a tour de force of these places replete with vivid descriptions of the flora, fauna, and seductive landscape of the area.

Sites range from Moccasin Bend in Chattanooga, inhabited by Cherokees and earlier Indian cultures and considered one of the most important archaeological complexes within a United States city, to the Qualla Boundary, the home of the Eastern Cherokee reservation, where visitors can still experience the historic Cherokee culture. For each site, Rozema gives historical background, directions to the site, and the hours of operation and telephone numbers if the site is located within a park or museum area. The book also includes an overview of Cherokee history that sets the stage for the tours of the historic sites. The first edition received an Award of Merit from the Tennessee Historical Commission.

The North Bay Narrative is the remarkable story of a remote Newfoundland village and its evolution from a community of a few families where men built boats by hand to today's collection of cottages where men guide visiting Atlantic salmon fishermen.Author and ardent fisherman Walter Staples made his first trip to this wild area of southwest Newfoundland in 1980. He had heard about the beautiful La Polie River valley and its runs of Atlantic salmon. What he discovered, however, was a much more complex story about rugged pioneer families who moved far from the nearest village in hopes of carving out a livelihood from the dense forest.North Bay's first settlers began building ocean-going fishing boats, cutting trees by hand, pulling them from the woods to the river bank, and floating the logs downstream to the village. The logs were pulled ashore and cut into boards by men using pit saws. The completed vessels, some sixty feet long, were launched by hand to the river, and sold to fishermen along the coast. From 1890 until 1968, three generations built over 150 vessels. The people of North Bay, never more than 80 at any one time, began moving away from the village after World War II. Although the last year around resident left in 1968, the village was already in transition. Many former residents returned during the summer and old houses were replaced with cottages. The LaPoile River still runs by the revived village, however, and local men guide fishermen who cast for Atlantic salmon.

His cut and slash mash-ups of subway platform billboards only exist in New York City, but Poster Boy's artful and funny appropriations of advertising have gotten him attention the world over. The New York Times dubbed him an "anti-consumerist Zorro with a razor blade, a sense of humor and a talent for collage"; the Guardian UK said of his work, it "is witty, web-savvy and economical . . . and the only materials it requires are chutzpah, imagination and a 50 cent blade."Poster Boy tweaks corporate copy, replacing it with incisive and playful puns and turns of phrase rich with innuendo and political punch. Beautiful models turn ghastly and iconic spokespeople become the mouthpieces for Poster Boy's ideas. Poster Boy: The War of Art collects his best work yet.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. 9.1.2013. Madison County in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina is a place of ear-popping drives and breathtaking views. It is also where federal antipoverty worker Nancy Dean Morgan was found naked, hogtied, and strangled in the backseat of her car in June 1970.An inept investigation involving local, state, and federal law-enforcement agencies failed to find a clear explanation of the motive or events of her murder. The case was left unsolved. Years later, after most of the material evidence had been lost or mishandled, one of Nancy's fellow VISTA workers--the last person known to have seen her alive--became the prime suspect, based on the testimony of one of the town's most notorious resident criminals. Did he kill Nancy, or was he another victim of the corrupt local political machine and its adherence to "mountain justice"?Met Her on the Mountain: A Forty-Year Quest to Solve the Appalachian Cold-Case Murder of Nancy Morgan is a tangled tale of rural noir. Author Mark Pinsky was profoundly struck by Nancy's story as a college student in North Carolina in 1970. Here, Pinsky presents the evolution of his investigation and also delves into the brutal history of Madison County, the site of a Civil War massacre that earned it the sobriquet "Bloody Madison." Met Her on the Mountain is a stirring mix of true crime, North Carolina political history, and one man's devotion to finding the truth.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. ABCing: Seeing the Alphabet Differently is a primer to seeing and understanding the visual world. From abstract to zeitgeist, the book uses the Latin alphabet to introduce ways of visualizing, thinking and talking about art and design. Each illustration is created using only the negative shapes of a given letter. It is not the actual letterforms from which these new perspectives take shape, but the spaces around them. The shapes are rotated and resized; they are not duplicated, mirrored or otherwise altered. Therefore the illustrations maintain their visual connection to the original letterform. The shapes are then composed as a visual translation of a given word's meaning, creating visual and conceptual connections between the letter, the word and the surrounding space. The result is a mixture of philosophy, poetry and art.The inspiration behind the book is to spur new and alternative approaches to how viewers look at an image, shifting the focus from the subject - the letter - to the surrounding space. While the words used to illustrate these visual translations have been chosen with designers in mind, ABCing not only provides seasoned designers with new ideas but it also serves as an excellent point of entry for students of all ages to learn how new perspectives can provide new meanings.
