Addressed to "Mumford" (highly likely the renowned American historian and critic Lewis Mumford), the letter is dated January 22, 1946, and written from Broch's residence at One Evelyn Place in Princeton, New Jersey. The letter features Broch's original, bold signature in black ink at the close. Historical & Literary Significance: Hermann Broch is considered one of the most important modernist writers of the 20th century, often ranked alongside James Joyce and Thomas Mann for his masterpieces The Sleepwalkers and The Death of Virgil. After fleeing Nazi-annexed Austria in 1938, Broch settled in the United States, spending significant time in Princeton where he shifted his focus heavily toward political and sociological theory to understand the rise of totalitarianism. This letter is exceptionally significant for two distinct reasons: 1. The Harcourt Brace Connection: Broch warmly acknowledges Mumford as the "first reader" of one of his books for the publisher Harcourt, Brace and Company, noting that he inscribed a copy specifically for him. This offers a rare, behind-the-scenes glimpse into the publishing and manuscript review process of the era. 2. The "Mass Psychology" Project: Broch explicitly mentions sending Mumford a paper that will become part of his "larger Mass Psychology." Broch's Massenpsychologie (Mass Psychology) was his monumental, lifelong theoretical project intended to analyze mass hysteria, fascism, and totalitarianism. Direct references to this project in his correspondence are highly sought after by literary scholars and historians.
