About the book >.>.> Why Cape Clear Island? As long ago as 1949 it became obvious that it was essential to have a bird observatory on our Irish coast if the study of migration was to progress. Much thought was given to the selection of a site that could satisfy the objects of the project and the choice lay between Great Saltee off the coast of Co. Wexford and somewhere in the south-west. The deciding factors were weighted in favour of Great Saltee because previous studies had suggested that the greatest volume of migration of both immigrant and emigrant species took place in the south-east of Ireland. Saltee, therefore, became an observatory in 1950. There were special difficulties peculiar to the place, however, and it seemed wise to have an alternative site available should Saltee not remain a practical proposition. Indeed, even with Saltee functioning, it was very desirable to have another observatory on our south coast. Second issue ("dos") of a new literary magazine founded by three Chilean poets and academics the year before: Carlos Pedraza, Jorge Millas, and Nicanor Parra, who was not only a world renown poet but also a physicist. Parra was considered one of the most influential Chilean poets of the Spanish language in the 20th century, often compared with Pablo Neruda. Parra described himself as an "anti-poet," due to his distaste for standard poetic pomp and function. Parra contributes one poem to this issue titled: "El angel." Illustrations by Carlos Pedraza. Jorge Millas was a well respected academic and philosopher in Chile. And Nicanor Parra was the founder of Revista Nueva created while the three were teachers at the Internado Nacional Barros Arana which was/is one of the two main public universities in Chile. Revista Nueva was not for sale in bookstores but was distributed just inside the Barros Arana school. This is a rare copy of the magazine and the first publication of Nicanor Parra, and also it is where he put in practice what he called "antipoesia." Inscribed by the poet and magazine founder Millas on the first blank sheet: "To my father I dedicate this nascent essay, that is my cradle, with regards, Jorge Millas, Aug. 31, 1935." Illustrations by Carlos Pedraza. Jorge Millas was a well respected academic and philosopher in Chile. Revista Nueva was created while the three were teachers at the Internado Nacional Barros Arana which was/is one of the two main public universities in Chile. Revista Nueva was not for sale in bookstores but was distributed just inside the Barros Arana school. This rare copy of the magazine is the first publication of Nicanor Parra, and also it is where Nicanor Parra put in practice what he called "antipoesia." Parra served as a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Chile from 1952 to 1991, and was a visiting professor at LSU, NYU and Yale University. He read his poetry in England, France, Russia, Mexico, Cuba, and the US. He published dozens of books.
