An experiment in low-price book publishing at a price of 2/6d and du Maurier's first book to be published in paperback. The stories were written between the years 1927 and 1930 when she was under twenty-three, and had appeared in various magazine publications at the time, before she had published her first novel. A little wear to edges and to top edge of spine, and scuffing to top and bottom of spine, but contents clean, with some darkening to page edges. Previous owner's name to top of first page. A nice-looking lot of different editions of the Persian Sufi poet's best-loved, classic epic poem, many being illustrated beautifully and by a range of different artists, and published in multiple formats. The poet, Omar Khayyam (or Khayyami) was born, likely at Nishapur, in the Persian northeast, somewhere between about 1025 and 1050 A.D. His surname "Khayyam" means "tent-maker" in Persian, which might, like St. Paul/Saul, have denoted his father's vocation and major income-source. The lot is comprised of the following: 1) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, London, England: George Harrap & Co., n.d. A particularly handsome volume, short quarto in size, measuring 11 5/8" by 8 1/2" tall and wide, respectively, bound in crushed burgundy suede over boards in a Yapp binding, and fine gilt-stamped lettering and illustration to front cover. Burgundy silk linen ribbon bookmark sewn in. Clean, unmarked interior. Printed by Brooks-Day & Son, Ltd., lithographers. Housed in a sturdy, if unlovely, paper-illustrated, Good condition clamshell box, paper title-label affixed neatly to bottom. Illustrated endpapers front and rear. Sumptuous tipped-in illustrations by Willy Pogany throughout. Unpaginated; 2) Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, New York: Grosset & Dunlap, 1956. Bound in short quarto hardcover format, measuring 11 1/4" x 8 1/2" tall and wide, respectively. Short biographical essay by John Hay, then a long essay to devoted to Omar Khayyam, the astronomer-poet of Persia. Yapp-boud suede cloth, sunned edges (to brown, from gray), and an unusually involved, textured cover, with gilt-stamped lettering and border around a bas-relief copper-plate inset of a reclining, half-nude woman in flowing robes.
