Hardcover. Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Edgeworth, Anthony (photography) (illustrator). As new condition oversized red cloth boards with gold front cover decoration and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Preface; Introduction; Club Addresses; and Acknowledgments. Profusely illustrated with 258 full-color photographs, many full page. Signed by the photographer/publisher, Anthony Edgeworth, with thin black pen on the first front title page. "This is a book about an extraordinary legacy and a living tradition. It offers an unprecedented tour of the very private clubs of Great Britain and Ireland at which the game of golf was born and nurtured. Here the socially prominent men of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain gathered out of love for a game and the pursuit of gentlemanly leisure. Here today's members preserve a sporting and companionable style of golf by keeping alive the customs and manners of their individual clubs, and through custodianship of some of the world's greatest courses. The books' two creators have gained unique access to the R&A and Prestwick, Royal Liverpool and Sandwich, Rye, Sunningdale, Swinley, ORoyal Worlington and Brancaster, gathering photographs and interviews from the inside. Also springing from these pages are the unsung pleasures of Cardiff's Portmarnock and the breathtaking scenery of Country Down. Anthony Edgeworth's striking colour images raise golf photography to new heights, while John de St. Jorre's blend of anecdotes, observations and history distills a century and more of tradition into a lively, atmospheric text. A preface by William C. Campbell, past Captain of the R&A and former President of the USGA, sets the tone. The patterns of behaviour set by these clubs' founders endure to provide each of them with its own style. For some this means foursomes, for others, fourball, for some a competitive, and for others a more relaxed, social game; for some elaborate luncheons or club rooms, for others simple sustenance or the shelter of a modest bar. [The book] brings the sights, sounds and smells of tradition to life: "the crunch of spikes on gravel, the murmur of caddies' voices.the chink of glasses in the bar, the aroma of hot buttered toast, and the fragrance of pipe and cigar tobacco lingering among the ghosts of long-dead golfers after the last member has gone home." For readers who have been members or guests at these clubs, this book will evoke fond memories. For readers who have yet to visit them, it offers not only an appreciation for the best of golf, but an inside glimpse into that pure and timeless golfing experience which according to Bill Campbell "allows each of us to claim a bit of immortality." - from the inner front jacket flap. JORRE, John [160] pp. Edgeworth Editions In publisher's slipcase 2007 10 3/4" x 8 3/4" The Racquet and Tennis Club, familiarly known as the R&T, is a private social and athletic club at 370 Park Avenue, between East 52nd and 53rd Streets in Midtown Manhattan, New York City. The Racquet and Tennis Club played an important role in the history of backgammon: In 1931 Wheaton Vaughan, who was then chairman of the club's Card and Backgammon Committee, invited representatives of selected New York City clubs and elsewhere and led the process to formulate and produce the Laws of Backgammon. This set of rules is the basis of the rules according to which backgammon is played today and was published by Charles Scribner's Sons. Backgammon remains a vibrant game in the Club.
