  • Published by Livermore: Thomas W. Norris, 1944. First edition (Kurutz, 1997, 246). Green wrappers, printed paper label, 22 pp. There were 250 copies printed by the Grabhorn Press. With a folding map tipped in at the end. Two copies are offered here. Based on the copy in the California State Library, Kurutz notes that the folding map is a "reproduction of an ornamental map of the United States & Mexico", but these copies show that at least three different maps were used: one has "Map of the Emigrant Road from Independence, Mo. To San Francisco. Part IV", by T.H. Jefferson, no date but 1849; the other has "Map of the Gold Region of California", 1850. One copy has the Newbegin's Book Shop, San Francisco label inside the rear wrapper. Both are in Fine cond, 1997

The "Copying Books" offered here were made by the William Mann Co. of Philadelphia. The chemically treated copying papers are thin, smooth, and translucent to enable reading of the text from the side opposite of the ink transfer. There are a few torn sheets, but the paper is surprisingly strong. It has a fine, crepe-like, wrinkly texture. A blotting paper was placed under a leaf, the written letter placed on top of the leaf and water applied with a brush. The three papers were placed in a press and the writing was transferred to the treated page. The Grass Valley Gold Extracting Co. was incorporated in December o
